Soo, I know there have been threads about this ... but they all seem to resolve themselves by saying, "if someone doesn't hire you because of your dreads, they're an idiot and you should forget about them anyway". I was wondering if anyone has considered if you are in a position where you have to make a good impression on customers and that is important to the job. I'm trying to get a certain job, but it is important to appear well groomed, especially because most customers are older and more conservative. So I can see his point, because my hair does look bad. Anyway, sorry if this has been posted already (or something similar)

I run my own business, and with that comes an expected level of customer service and satisfaction. I have been doing this for 6 years now and had dreads for a year and half. I have yet to loose any business because of my hair. I provide IT services for small and medium sized business, but specialize in web design and creating custom online business management software. I dunno, if your good and confident at what you do then little strands of hair shouldn't dictate your success.

    Yeah ive considered it ??

I assume your after advise, i cant honestly tell you anything because I don't know what job, or ow presentable or how old or how conservative. But id say either no dreads or different job, as a rule of thumb. That said, the old's at my work don't have a problem with me.

All of my jobs have been front line customer service, usually in a resort enviroment, sometimes in a high class atmosphere and I've never had a problem getting a job. My additude and experience seem to out-weigh my dreadlocks and visible tattoos.

I work a job where we are suppose to look well groomed and straight laced. I have dreads and usually a beard but my manager doesn't care because I work well.
I had an interview last month where they asked me back for a second interview but I turned it down for personel reasons.

Hell the way I see it. If you can sell yourself to a conservative judgmental prick with dreads, I would say that gives you an edge over the next guy who might take first impressions lightly. A genuine smile goes a really long way. People rarely feel intimidated or timid if you approach them with a smile and a bit of confidence.

I have worked in high end hotels and resorts like bcmama, but I have had a different experience. Some of my places of work that didn't normally allow nose rings allowed me to wear it and other places insisted I remove it. The place that insisted that I remove it is the same place that I know would not hire a person with dreads. Their clientele simply would not allow for it and they make no bones about it.

I wonder though, why pick a career that insists you change a piece of you that means a lot. Six months ago I don't think I would have felt this way, but after getting my dreads, I know that if I had to remove them, chances are it's not a job that would interest me.

... its worth a try? If you have to make a good impression you probably should try to get the job if your dreads are just starting and look like messy hair. also try using a tam or some kind of wrap to make them more presentable to the old folks. Change the old peoples mind. haha. probably impossible but worth a try.

If I already had dreads than I wouldn't worry about it, but in the beginning stages of dreads, they're pretty messy looking and that's one of the main reasons I won't get dreads right now. Jobs are too scarce to risk losing this one because it looks like I don't brush my hair. If I could easily find another job, maybe, but in a small town, it's hard.

Yeah, you could always see if who ever is employing you would be alright with you getting them, you could say your could cover them with a tam. Shit. Right now i would get dreads but my hair is short. (i made a comprmise with my mom, so i could get my ear pierced) Hopefully i can let it grow untill im 18 then get dreads.

Jobs... well for me since im still in school (summer) i dont really want a job but the money would be good. I need to find somewhere that doesnt drug test though, and yeah. small towns suck for jobs.

It's hard for people that "visually" conform to the norms to get a job right now. It's really not about the dwelling on the fact you can get one, but rather "when I find one" attitude. Think positive and a job will come your way no matter what hair you have.

Where I still in school and being supported by my parents, I would have no problem with it. But a job is a nessesity for me. I lose this job and I'm fucked royally.

Well yeah, thats why i said you could still ask to see if they would allow you to, and if not then dont get dreads. *shrug*
But yeah it would probably be unwise to just go get them.... :D

i had dreads for a few years. basically what i found is that if your qualified to do a job, then the hair dosent matter. i of course was never qualified so the hair was definately the deal breaker in getting good work. although most for most women, and definately for black people, that does not seem to be the case as it is for a white male having dreads. but it could just be that every girl or black person i knew with dreads and a good job were just qualified real well.

Well, my brother was rejected from this same job until he got rid of his mohawk. Not a crazy one either. It's this town. I live in the bible belt. They'd prefer to lynch the "weirdos", but they'll settle for denying them employment. I just have to wait or live without.

It was a pretty tame mohawk (not a fohawk). It wasn't very long and it wasn't different colors. Usually he didn't even spike it. It just layed on his head. People around here don't see degrees in non-conformity. You're either normal or you're not. My manager would probably have no personal problem with it, it's the clientel that we have to worry about. And they will find whatever they can to complain about.
While I am Christian (to an extent) people around here are all messed up. These are the people that make other Christians look crazy. Aparently their god is all about hate.
