race and preferences

posted this in the random thoughts forum. figured i might get the discussion i was looking for here.

a sociology professor once told me that people, in general, prefer those who are like them. a women favors women, a white man favors white men, a black women favors black women, etc.

what i've noticed: why is it that black people tend to favor black people even more so than other races/cultures/whatever? i mean, it seems almost like some black people risk being criticized by other black people if they don't listen to rap music...etc. is this a result of black folk still being behind the white man in average wages for the same job? or is it a result of black people simply understanding black culture more...and well...preferring entertainment or whatnot from folk that understand what it's like to be...black.

i'm pretty much talking about black americans here. that seems, to me, to be a distinct culture, at least.

I um, totally disagree with that assertion. People tend to prefer to marry and be more compatible with people of their own race, but as a rule, there isn't any race that is more into themselves than another.

It's not like black folk are doing anybody any favours by trying to re-write history to make it seem like everything's fine now, and minorities have no barriers that they face when they attempt to assimilate into a white culture.

Has anyone ever heard the A Girl Like Me tests?

You know, where psychologists placed a black baby doll and a white baby doll side by side on a table. They then asked 253 black children which doll they wanted to play with and why. 2/3 of the children chose the white doll. In 1985, and again in 2005.

These experiments proves the extent that segregation and systemic oppression has harmed black children's self image.

Just because we see blacks, asians, hispanics, etc. on our TV-land and media outlets, does not mean that this is evidence of real progress. In fact, these outlets are more questionable. They are first and foremost a response to the fact that advertisers are now willing to buy time for shows that are targeted to those communities they judge to have sufficient purchasing power.

The self-deprecating and ironic humour in TV shows like Fresh Prince of Bel Air or Little Mosque on the Prairie , only confirms the perception that "other" cultures are essentially different from the dominant Euro-white culture.

Many of this "rap music" or whatever is bargaining power to make it clear that the black folks are willing consumers.

But we're not going to see a Black Panther American Girl doll turn up any time soon, are we?

 

What about that guy who is making money right now on white culture by publishing Shōnagon style lists of "what white people like..."?

Or those shows of Dora the Explorer? It's the same kind of cultural leaning.

 

i dunno. while you make a good point, i'm gonna have to go with the sociology professor's statement on a sociological topic. it was a shock to me too.

but yeah, what you describe definitely would kinda explain why black folk would want to cling to one another and support one another more. like those "yes we can" obama posters.

I don't believe that black people like black people anymore than any other race likes it's own people.

 

oh, right on. i think i see what you're saying. that it's not any more of a preference with black people than other races.

i dunno though, i've noticed otherwise. quite a few of the black people i know. the only nonrap music they'll listen to: jimi hendrix. bob marley. that's it. their favorite comedians. black.

 

i dunno about that. self deprecating humor is pretty common in the comedy world. they all seem to have self esteem issues, at least.

just watched the youtube video. i'd say it's more of a testament to the darker nature of people. take away the rules, people go nuts. i don't imagine you'd see much better if the same sort of business was set up in a black neighborhood.

but yeah, statistically, america still is a white christian male dominated society.

 

Oppressed minority groups stick together out of necessity. In this country, black is the most obvious example of that behavior.

 

Well, here goes. I am absolutely NOT racist by any strech of the imagination, so don't even go there. But what I see is being of a race other then white tends to make you part of an exclusive "club" with actions accordingly... I don't think it is a matter of "liking" members of your race better, if they DID, they would have more self respect. I think it's simply a matter of PRIDE in the race as a whole. You know, we're (black,red,mexican....) and we have STRUGGLED HARDER THAN MOST, and we're proud of being black/red/Mexican.....

Like I said, I'm TOTALLY 100% not "racist". But I completely understand. For example, if I were a "native American" woman, I would not want a damn thing to do with any relationships with any white man. If I were Black, I'd feel the same. I would only marry within my race.

I think any minority who feels "downtrodden" probably tends to feel more pride in their particular society than most.

 

I don't claim to know what an entire group of the population thinks. I don't see how anyone can.

And what happens in 2050 when whites are the minority?

Some people are always comfortable with what they know, others are more adventurous.

 

So why are having so much discussion and hyperbole about same sex marriage? Can you professor explain that? Seems your sociology professor is making a case that it's natural.

 

Isn't there alot of black on black discrimination?Alot of black on black crime etc. etc.-I think that professor is wrong in saying all black people like each other or stick together.--Maybe the US media portrays it that way now a days .--I'm really no expert though because not many blacks where I live.---------------As far as 'forced diversity' in general,it never did work,does not work,will never work--it's just human nature.It's a little like a pre-arranged marriage,you cannot force 1 person to like the other person.

 

i don't have a racial preference. i like american, african men, south american men, european men, middle eastern men... not asian men but i mean i am pretty open with my preference.

Whites are already the minority in the global village. Perhaps you were referring the to the palate of races in the USA?

 

I think it has a lot to do with blacks hardly ever surviving horror movies. Lets just look at a few black tragedies in the horror genre: Kelly Roland couldn't out run Freddie, Will Smith couldn't even save himself in a movie in stared in (I Am Legend), and of course the infamous incident where Sam Jackson gets chopped in half by a shark in the middle of a boner inducing speech. Those are just a few examples of why us nubian kings and queens need to stick together to fight the injustices of the supernatural and wicked. Remember Spike Lee had a dream that black actors and actress would live through a movie from T-virus beginning to grueling zombie horde end.

i don't think he said anything about it being natural...but the % of homosexuals in the world astounded me. i swear he said it was something like 8%.

in a world without racism, it'd be a lot easier to intelligently discuss topics like race.


and as far as that youtube video about chicago. i was recently invited to visit a black friend in chicago. when i refused (just didn't wanna make the drive), he said that his family wasn't racist, as if that was a common thing that worried white people.
