I'm asking you for your opinion but be nice. (I'm sensitive.) I'm a single lady and I'm not dating anyone so I have no one to really do things with or enjoy things. I've got this idea in my head that I could travel places and do fun things by myself. (I've traveled in the country but never anywhere farther than the Midwest. (Except California but then my sister lived out there and met me at the Airport.) Here is my dilemma: I'm thinking about traveling to, I don't know; let’s say Puerto Rico. I don't have anybody that I know that would like to come with me but I'd really like to go. Some people would say that I was crazy and that I should find a traveling companion because it's just not safe for a woman to travel alone but I'd like to hear what you honestly think.
Its not safe for anyone to travel alone. But that beinbg said, I think its ok to go alone. It would just be a lot better if you had someone to share it with.
hmmm well i knew this girl...she spent a summer in europe alone and since she was alone, she kinda forced herself to meet people and had an amazing time. but ya, travelling alone isnt safe in general but its been done, and if it feels right and its something you could do, then go for it.
I think travelling by yourself is a great idea. I've travelled a lot by myself and I can honestly say I've enjoyed it a lot. And it's a great way to meet new people as well. So... go for it girl!
It isn't safe for anyone to travel alone, whether they are male or female. But I have heard that traveling alone is a good experience and something that everyone should try. If you don't want to be lonely, then you will force yourself to mingle and conversate with others. Which is a good thing. I hope whatever you decide to do, you do it safely and most importantly have fun.
i say go for it alone... its a time you can get to know yourself and force yourself to get to know new people
yep.. travelling alone is so groovy, it conjures up the essence of the sylvan saunterer, the dervish, the holy wanderer but if you don't feel safe enough... carry a gun.
My name is Richard. So what else do you need to know? Stuff about my family or where I am from? None of that matters. Not once you cross the ocean and cut yourself loose. Looking for something more beautiful, something more exciting, and yes I admit, something more dangerous. So after 18 hours in the back of an airplane, 3 dumb movies, 2 plastic dinners, 6 beers and absolutely no sleep I finally touched down in Bangkok. And this is it, Bangkok, good time city, gateway to South East Asia where dollars and deutschmarks get turned into counterfeit watches and genuine scars. This is where the hungry come to feed. So never refuse an invitation. Never resist the unfamiliar. Never fail to be polite. And never outstay your welcome. Just keep your mind open and suck in the experience, and if it hurts it's probably worth it. The only downer is everyones got the same idea. We all travel thousands of miles just to watch tv and check into somwhere with all the comforts of home. And you gotta ask yourself What is the point of that? And as for travelling alone, fuck it. If that's the way it has to be, than that's the way it is.
I'm going travelling for a year in January on my own. Don't sit around just cos you have nobody to go with you, just go on your own. If you are staying in Hostels and the like you'll meet loads of other travellers aswell.
___________________ I know a girl that says she never travels alone. Until this year she never went out to eat without a friend or her husband.
Two summers ago I went to Japan alone. It was really fun. I only spent one week on my own (the other 4 weeks staying with 2 different host families.) It's fun because you do whatever YOU want to do, and you meet other people. This day in age, NOTHING is safe. As long as you just use common sense and don't get into an obviously dangerous situation, then you'll be fine.
Be nice? Why would we be mean? I wish I had the courage to do that. A friend and I discussed it once, but I chickened out. Just an idea, and I don't know how trusting you are, but there's a site where you can arrange to sleep at peoples houses. I don't know many specifics, but I think it's findacouch.com or something. Perhaps you could arrange to meet a bunch of people on the forums, and make a big tour doing that? Edit* Somebody was telling me about "hostles" or something like that. Said it's like a big room w/ several beds, and each person pays like 10-20 dollars for a night. Less privacy, but much cheaper than hotels.
id say Go for it!!! if it's something you want to do... do it. its something ive thought of doing at times, as well. just remember to be EXTRA SAFE if you go traveling alone! dont walk on seedy streets alone, always be alert and aware of your surroundings, etc.
travelling alone is gives the most amazing feeling of independance. last summer i travelled from ontario to b.c. i paid for the whole trip and made all the arrangments myself. i had a courier company pick me up at my door, drive me two hours to the major air port, i caught the plane, got picked up at the air port by a taxi. stayed a night at a cousins house, they took me to the bus station and then i did a 9 hour bus ride to my grandmas place. then on the way home i did pretty much the same thing. i think everyone should travel alon atleast once, but be safe about it. for example i could have saved $400 if i just took the bus the whole way, but being that i was 17 i didn't feel safe doing a threeday two night bus trip by myself with 3 hour layovers at like 1 am in cities like winnipeg etc...
I know what you mean. I dunno how bad that one is, but I've seen some in places that you can see bars on house windows. It's kind of creepy, but traveling cheap is good.
I think that sounds soo exciting! I would love to do that myself. I have thought of taking road trips by myself, but have always been very discouraged by my parents and friends. I've never known anybody that has traveled alone before. I am so glad you posted this thread because it has me thinking about it again, and seriously considering doing something this summer... hmmm... let me know what you decide, and definitely, DEFINITELY tell us all about any trips!!
