My best friend has silently fought with depression for years. Last month, he cheated on his girlfriend and she caught him. He was obviously upset and guilt ridden, and after this, he got a really good second job that he convinced himself he was going to be head of the division and be rich and everything was going to be good in his life again. Well, he didnt sleep for a week (12 hours in 7 days). He ended up losing both his jobs and having a manic episode. Convinced people were tracking him through his cell phone and cards, he threw his cell away and his wallet with money and ID in it. He really lost it.

His parents eventually sent him to the psych ward for a week and he was on suicide watch. He has been on Olanzapan ever since. He was self medicating with pot before, now he has quit completely.

My concern is, his psychologist has NOT recommended therapy, they are just telling him to stay on Olanzapan for a year at least. This guy was DEPRESSIVE not BI POLAR or MANIC. Yes, he had an episode, but it was due to severe insomnia.

What do you think of the situation? From what I have read Olanzapan is for people that have proven RESISTANT to other forms of depression medicine. I cant believe they have him on such STRONG medicines without even trying to work through his issues! Just another example of modern medicine failing us. It breaks my heart to think he may not get better because they just want to mask his problems instead of working on them.
