I always forget how good Zappa and the Mothers actually were. They occupy that space in my head which I seldom visit (it contains this such as birthdays, heights of young and growing relatives etc.), but I just can't fault Hot Rats! Seems almost cartoonish sometimes, but upon actual listening is, yes possibly that, but also mcuh, mcuh more. :cheers2:
agreed awesome tuneage for sure, im seeing zappa plays zappa in a few months so im sure ill be in full zappa mode
I AM SEEING ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA AT THE EDINBURGH PLAYHOUSE TONIGHT!!!! i am so fucking excited. gonna be havin a few blunts on the way in my mates van. anyone goin!?
he was a great musician.he could do his own thing while being influenced by the music he enjoyed.he wrote some nice lyrics to go with his music.
Oh you lucky fuckin' dog! I want a detailed report instantly! Did they play " The Black Page"? What was the musician line- up? Was Terry Bozio there? Ike Willis? Steve Via? Please tell all! ZW eace:
Dweezil Zappa - guitar (and some vocals) Scheila Gonzalez - saxophone, flute, keyboards and vocals Pete Griffin - bass Billy Hulting - marimba, mallets and percussions and a big ass gong. Jamie Kime - guitar Joe Travers - drums, vocals Ben Thomas - lead vocals (i've seen recordings of the show with other vocalists and this guy is THEE best at doin Frank's voice! he really is. he even gets that background accent of frank's in there. beautiful!) sadly, no big names other than Dweezil. everytime scheila went in for a big sax solo, dweezil stopped playing/lookin at the audience and just STARED at her. i think he has a little thing for the lady. they didn't play The Black Page sadly, but they played Outside Now & Watermelon in Easter Hay though which was AMAZING (to say the least!), so that makes up for it. they played Don't Eat That Yellow Snow followed by St Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast, and then Father O'Blivion. the holy trinity of "apostrophe (')" they played Pygmy Twylyte, and they were GONNA play Cosmik Debris but sooo many people in the crowd were shouting for Bobby Brown Goes Down, that they just played the instrumental of that and Dweezil ORDERED the audience to sing it themselves. it was fantastic! on top of that, they played Black Napkins, Montana, Village of the Sun, Magic Fingers, Echidna’s Arf, Inca Roads (very good shred version by Dweezil!), King Kong (excellent sax work by Scheila), Bamboozled By Love & Zomby Woof! then they came on for encore and did Peaches En Regalia, followed by Willie The Pimp. if i remember any other songs, i'll post em up. it was AMAZING. ABSOLUTELY. best gig of my life so far. you should go see them! every fan should! EDIT!:: you know the george michael song, "Careless Whispers" with the sax part that EVERYONE knows? well, halfway through scheila's sax solo on Inca Roads, Dweezil stopped her cos there was a bit that sounded like "Careless Whispers", so he got her to improvise between that song and Inca Roads, it was actually really good. and then he got her to do an eastern style solo on the flute, and she managed to mix it up so well that she even stunned Dweezil by incorporating "Careless Whispers"'s most memorable parts into it at the end for a climax! yous all have to just go see this shit!!
Wow, great report dude, I can tell you're a proper fan... Outside now, Watermelon in easter hay, Inca Roads...musta been pure ecstasy! I saw Frank in Boulder, Colorado, 1980. I think it was the "Shut up an' play your guitar" tour. It was some of the most advanced music I had ever heard, most of it way over my head at the time. The only recognizable tunes he played were Cosmic debris and Montana. The rest was just extremely dense improvisational jazz/rock/weird. It was to say the least, fantastic. I'm just gonna have to get my shit together next time Dwezzil brings his tour to my part of the country. We are so lucky to have him carrying on the legacy! ...Music is the best! ZW eace:
no matter how many times i go see ZPZ, you'll still be one better than me cos you have seen THEE man in the flesh!! i am sooooo jealous.
