Anyone here like him and his philosophy? I find him very inspireing (sp..) When I was in highschool, we never even mentioned him in philosophy classes. I find that he should be a part of school program. I am fascinated about the way he lived in his last days. He was so full of energy and enthousiasm about his own death. It takes a LOT of self awareness to have that kind of attitude towards death. He never really grew old. I just kind of envy him on all the acid he took in his life, when I search my ass of to find it here.
I don't know who he is, but I'll have to check him out. Wasn't he mentioned in a song by The Who? I could swear he was. "I asked Timothy Leary" is how the line goes, I think.
um, yes. he was one of the pioneer expreimentors with LSD. he and Ram Dass were professors somewhere ( havard i think) and tested acid while it was legal. Ram Dass quit and did his thing, and they both went down as the first people with actual societal credit to test an illicit drug. But i am curious to know how he died. a little in the dark about that... Rock On.
he was euthanised and his head was surgically removed immediately after and cryongenically preserved to perhaps be revived one day and attached to an healthy body. there is a documentary recording the whole event. I will see if I can find it and post it here.

Well, he is the father of psychadelic generation. He was promoting the usage of LSD before it became so popular in 60's. He was a doctor (PHD) of psychology. The president called him "the most dangerous man in america". He was arrested for drug posession. They gave him psycho-tests to fill up in order to see in what prison to put him. Those tests were based on his own research (imagine the irony) so he knew how to fill them, and he ended up in a minimum controled prison, and escaped. He traveled the world, and was later on found in Afganistan I think. They put him back into prison. He was paroled in the 70's this all helped him to grow in a living legend. Anyway, he was a psychologist, philosopher, and one of the great thinkers of 20th century. In the more recent times he became fascinated with internet and computers, and he considered internet to be the LSD of 90's (a way to expand mind). He died in 1996 out of prostate cancer. He planed to kill him self with LSD overdose live, broadcasted over the internet on his own private web-site when the pain would start to become unbarable. He gave up on that plan. Anyway he died the natural way. As ironic as that may sound, he was full of life in his last days (he was 75 when he died I think), and looked at death as an ultimate experience, an ultimate trip. He said that all his life was a "rehersal" for that big event. He is most fameous for his theory of 8 circles of consciousness. These circles are actually parts of human brain, each circle is a next stage in biological evolution. Oh yea, his ashes were put on a rocket spaceship together with ashes of the creator of Star Trek, and blasted into space. As we speak, his particles are traveling into infinity. What a lifestory.. And yes, he is mentioned in some songs.
A model of the brain in eight circuits according to Robert Anton Wilson and Timothy Leary THE EIGHT CIRCUITS: Bio-Survival Enotional-Territorial Laryngeal-Manual Socio-Sexual Neurosomatic Neuro-Electric Neurogenetic Neuro-Atomic BIO-SURVIVAL (Autonomic) (physical Intelligence) Level of Reality: Invertebrate Drug Trigger: Opiates Function: Mother-Child bonding Circuit #:384 Gurdjieff Center: Movement Center Life form: Uni-cellular Dimension: forward-back Description: "baby-brain"; fight-or-flight [Instincts:] Passivity, safety, nourishment Medium: the organism (Bios) Some humans never become aware of any level of reality beyond this one. There is no reason to call them human.EMOTIONAL-TERRITORIAL (Power) (emotional intelligence) Level of Reality: mammalian Drug Trigger: alcohol Function: fighting, politics, pack-forming Circuit#:192 Gurdjieff Center: False Emotional Life form: vertebrates Dimension: right-left Description: "toddler brain"; rule-or-be-ruled [Bias:] self-expression, status, power Medium: belief systems (memes) Some humans (ideologues and fanatics) see this as the supreme level of reality. It is the most attained by most politicians and military leaders.LARYNGEAL-MANUAL (Semantic, Dextero-Symbolic) (conceptual intelligence) Level of Reality: paleolithic Drug Trigger: cocaine Function: learning, skill, creativity Circuit#: 96 Gurdjieff Center: False Intellectual Life Form: hominids Dimension: up-down Description: "ego status"; tool-making, problem-solving [Worldview:] paying attention, mapmaking, naming, articulation Medium: conceptual frameworks (paradigms, metamemes) This is the level of reality at which most academics and intellectuals operate. Reality consists of nails; we must find the right hammers.SOCIO-SEXUAL (Domestic) (social intelligence) Level of Reality: civilized Drug Trigger: norepinephrine Function: hive-unity, society, parenting Circuit#: 48 Gudjieff Center: False Personality Life Form: Humankind Dimension: past-future Description: "social self"; transmission of culture [Ethos:] adolescence/individuation; adulthood/maturation; collectivization/socialization Medium: code of ethics (ethos) Attained eight thousand years ago, this level of reality ("culture") may be the one at which humanity is stuck, unaware anything lies beyond...WARNING: Here lies the CHAPEL PERILOUS. Beyond here you may have to SMI2LE. Because if you do not escape the gravity well of the planet, use your HEAD, and extend your life, you may not be able to activate the higher four circuits. NEUROSOMATIC (Hedonic) (Sensory intelligence) Level of Reality: hedonic Drug Trigger: marijuana Function: hedonic engineering: Tantra, Yoga, etc. Circuit#: 24 Gurdjieff Center: Magnetic center Life Form: Free-fall (cosmic migration) Dimension: Linear-cyclic Description: "free floating"; the turn-on [Pleasures:] Rapture, ritual, charisma Medium: the five senses Aesthetes, epicureans, space travellers, and libertines discover the awakened possibilites of the higher circuits - but then often forget that such pleasures are a means, and not an end.NEURO-ELECTRIC (Metaprogramming, Psychotronic) (Psychic Intelligence) Level of Reality: Psionic Drug Trigger: peyote Function: neurologic: precognition, ESP Circuit#: 12 Gurdjieff Center: True Emotional Life Form: I squared (intelligence exponentiated) Dimension: here-there Description: "metaprogramming"; awareness of possibilities [Perspectives:] clairvoyance, reality selection, precognition Medium: CNS (central nervous system) People attaining this level of reality may become aware of the contingency of their particular reality-tunnels; but may not see the way OUT. Knowing that reality is a Glass Bead Game, they may lose their vision in the sparkle of the beads.NEUROGENETIC (Evolutionary) (Mythic intelligence) Level of Reality: Immortal Drug Trigger: LSD Function: DNA awareness, ecological symbiosis Circuit#: 6 Gurdjieff Center: True Intellectual Life Form: Immortality Dimension: life-death Description: "collective unconscious"; species-memory [Collective unconscious:] synchronicity, alchemy, astrology Medium: DNA & Gaia (the Planet) At this level, one becomes aware of Intelligences besides their own. Such Intelligences may be Higher or Lower; but they are certain to be Alien. Synchronicity begins to overcome the Law of Accident. Planetary noosphere becomes visible.NEURO-ATOMIC (Metaphysiological) (Spiritual intelligence) Level of Reality: Cosmic Drug Trigger: Katamine Function: cosmic engineering Circuit#: 3 Gurdjieff Center: The Essence Life Form: Cosmic union Dimension: microcosm-macrocosm Description: "extraterrestrial unconscious"; cosmic mind [Being:] Paradox, dreaming, factor 'X' Medium: subatomic mysteries (quantum reality) This is the level of the Bodhisattva and the Taoist Immortal, and of it, only they can speak. While Leary's personal website is 'currently closed for renovation' (May be, you find something at the wayback machine), his friend Wilson homepage is to find here
Most of that didn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. Where can I find more about this guy? So he was a psychiatrist? And he has books published or...?
Psychologist... but he was a phylosopher more than that. Well you can start on line. There are a lot of sites dedicated to him. He's last words have been quoted many times: "beautifull...beautifull...why?Why?Why?...Why not?
I think he was one of the best phylosopher ever. He was also pretty brave. I mean he risked his life so many times just for telling people things, and he was in prison few times... I like some of his ideas...
Ah little guy with white hair and a white suit. Met him way back at Leigh University when duh feds had him in their propaganda machine, saying stupid things like in a rocket ship, join up in zero gravity and have sex, instead uv what the feds wanted 2 stop. Like, I like, getin high, hangin out, and groovin my Long dreadz.
I just found out that the whole head thing is not true. It was recorded on video, but it is a hoax. I don't know the details why it was done. He did plan to preserve his brain, but he never actually did it. He said he wanted to be transplanted into a black woman next time.
