So I didn't know where else to put this, and since the main reason I'm getting a bike is health, I decided on here. So I'm looking to get a road bike. I don't know much about them and am not really looking for anything too special. I just need it to get to and from work/the train station/around town, etc. and was looking for any tips. Bumming rides of people and not being able to go places when a parent's car isn't around sucks. I'm REALLY short on money and would prefer to not spend any more than $400. So what am I looking for? Any suggestions would be great! :cheers2:
I would definitely go check out some bike shops - actual bike shops. not those bikes at a walmart or something. plus, a bike shop will have peopel working there who know a good deal about the bikes they sell...and you may be able to buy last or 2 seasons ago bike practically new for cheap just because they are bringing in new stock. test out a few bikes, see which one you like the best. you should be able to get a nice bike for sub $400 you might do well with a hybrid bike - it combines a mountain bike with a road bike...
Luckily enough I have a mountain bike and a road bike. I hardly ever use my mountain bike, it is very heavy. Riding around town or even on gravle paths a road bike is just fine. They are a smoother ride and i find that they are extremely effortless compared to a mountain bike.
Hey man, I've had lots of road and mountain bikes. Some have been beaters and some cost a couple months salary. Right now I'm riding an OLD mountain bike I picked up used for $50.00. I put some serfas drifter (high pressuer street) tires on it and I'm not affraid to take all of those short cuts through parking lots, golf courses and construction sites. I sold my last road bike because I could only ride it on smooth pavement. Think about where you will be riding before droping all of your cash on some new roadbike that will taco a wheel on your first trip through a pothole. Just my .02 cents.
By a cheap ass bike and get one of these http://www.e-bikekit.com/ I just got one and it kicks ass, there is almost no need for a car for around town stuff. Plus if you scroll down the page you have a chance to win a free one.
check out some garage sales, salvation armys, news paper. if your not doing any hard core bikeing then you wont need anything tiptop. Specialized are always good, just make sure nothings to bent like rims, forks, and make sure it hasent been sitting outside for a long time. If you look around I wouldent be supprised if you found a good deal for something between 15 to 50 bucks. Good luck
Yeah. I've put over a 1000 miles on the bike that I got for $5 at a garage sale. It's a complete piece of junk, but it moves. If I were you, I'd take a trip to your local bike shop. I'd probably be taking a look at the road bikes there. I know that at my local one, there are some very nice bikes in the $400 dollar range. If you go there, and find some potential bikes, write them down. And then post them here and I can tell you what I know about them.
