its things like this that make me so insignificant. things that make me wonder why we're trying to cure AIDS, explore space.

    why?
    anyone know?

  2. For this to disturb me I'd have to know that mind was subservient to matter, and there is no proof of this. But I still think we do a lot of the things we do senselessly, just for the sake of adventure. Why not, for instance, wait until you can build some totally failsafe space exploratory vehicle before you start sending humans up? Couldn't you do that without risking human lives? So astronauts are kind of strange. They just think they have the right to go to outer space.

i think it was just reading that that is what got me bummed out.
i don't understand the point of us. who cares about making a little pebble we call Earth, better?

and saying that we're here for a god, well, what then? so we live on this pebble so we serve a god and be happy when we die. and? unless the entire universe is a living thing, and is full of other living things, I don't get the point.

Neon--when have humans ever built a fail-safe ANYTHING? Cars can malfunction, so can planes. What makes you think spacecraft has a chance of being any different?

As for the link, no, I don't find it depressing. For one, they are talking about the known universe; for all we know, there could be alternate universes that we'll never be able to discover. Second, none of this is going to happen in our lifetime, or even our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren's lifetime. We have a duty to each other (present and future people) to make this world a better place. You don't even have to believe in God--just believe in love.

Nothingness. This is exciting stuff to think about. It feels empowering to me, not depressing.

Interesting link, but I could only follow along until here:

That's like saying all matter and energy in existence is contained in a room, and that once everything ceases to exist in this room, it will just be an empty room. This implies the universe is contained in/by something. The universe is the room, not inside the room. When everything ceases to exist, nothing is left. I don't claim to know what that looks like but I'm pretty sure it's not an empty container. Or a vacuum. or anything. I'm with the Greeks.

I also don't follow the logic of these spontaneous events occurring, like atoms appearing or substances forming out of nothing. Does anyone else agree?

*I don't claim to know the truth, these are just my ideas at the present moment. I'm flexible.

I agree that it wouldn't be logical...but then again, I've never had much faith in logic anyway.

  7. We care, right? I don't think it's something that has to be justified. We're here; we care. It's innate. But why is it innate? That it is so natural declares to me the splendidness of the cosmos. The world is our oyster!

it doesn't matter if its going to happen when I'm alive or not. its the thought that we come and go. we think we're so great because we're the human race, but we're only creating and managing unessecary things on this little pebble of ours.

    Why are you so sure?
I believe in one universe, but still.

If the universe contains all that exists, how can something exist outside of it? i.e. how can it be contained by something else?

....but if nothing is then it must exist and if it exists then it must be a something.

if we have more than one universe, that means there are universes outside of ours. if there are more than two seperate things, then they must occupy a space. the universe actually has a calculated size. it expands at 57 km/sec i believe.

    Let me rephrase..

    no thing exists.

  14. Perhaps rather than containing all that exists, it is projected by the observer. And/or the entire thing is an observer of sorts.
