this thread made me mad for some reason. she is a self-hater like dftw said. and you sound like you weren't too into your locks anyways. it's just fucking hair. she needs to get over it. besides, she's just a sister-in-law. nobody important.
There are as many opinions as people, regardless of color. You have to do what makes you feel best. If your relationship is more important than your hairstyle, let it go. If you are trying to get dreads because its who you are, confront her. Either way, the choice is yours, but I'll bet the tension isn't going to stop with your choice of hairstyle. Seems to me she just wanted to see what you'll put up with.
It made me a little angry and a bit sad that OP would listen to such idiocy. And I personally think the idea of dreads are cool, but they are usually ugly as fuck =P
i lke my dreads but its always easy for me to start them stop them kinda thing. m just trying to find the right time and there is always interuptions but now i know better. ill start them when im ready
Dreads are a long term commitment, and I think that's part of what makes them special. Someone will always try to throw up a barrier to what you want. The question is, are you determined enough to plow right through them?
lol @ starting dreads. its more likely that you will stop caring and dreads will happen without any foresight. get it yet? no offense, but 3 days you didn't have dreads. you had badly damaged backcombed hair. and when dreads happen with luck you will keep them as a gift to yourself. you may learn something not be able to just change. just change because sister in law says a sly word, she's projecting insecurity and you caught a big load.
Isn't it kind of ridiculous that she doesn't like dreads because of the nappy appearance and overall messiness and hates her african hair so she takes your knots out BUT she is doing the same thing to herself by trying to get that "white" type hair with chemicals and product instead of embracing her own lovely hair? Like why is it okay for her to straighten and process her hair but you can't try to get dreads? Makes no sense, and I agree she is a self-hater.
You should have stood your ground more, if you want dreads you have every right to them if she doesn't want to see a white person with dreads she can look away.
dreads are hair that is knotted. dreads that been there for a while are mature dreads. if i started by locking my hair, its a dread sorry mmg. i didnt back comb, i twisted and ripped. I just have to clarify that. I like starting them and having them. At that point I didnt want to futher make the situation uncomfortable. anyway the main thing i was trying to get at was do all people of different races feel that way, but they dont. everyone has there own opinion
