agree to disagree, I have a friend who is in a prog band and they spend all their time trying to write riffs in obscure time signatures, and as with most prog bands they are each individually talented musicians they really get arrogant with prog, original Prog rock was people trying to break away, soundscapes and powerful mixes of synths and traditional rock lineup, but this new stuff is just doing it because they can, just random blocks of disonant riffs
Thats because Metallica can't stick with one riff for more than 20 seconds and it seemed to work for them up until this most recent album which i heard the single on the radio and they must have like 20 riffs in that one song, they have enough material to write an album with alot of good songs, as the riffs themselves are generally sound, but they just pile em all together, their old time signatures pretty much were 4/4 with the odd jump to 3/4 for a bar, its not really breaking boundries of musical oppression
I'm sure you've heard of them, but if not, check out the band Dream Theatre. They do some awesome progressive metal.
Just remembered about Protest the Hero also. They've only put out 2 albums so far, but that's because everyone in the band is in like their early 20s, but they're fucking awesome. Can't wait to hear them in a couple years when they get even better.
Yeah, I much prefer the PF style to heavier stuff like Dream Theatre, but the thread is more progressive metal oriented.
lol, me too. their time signatures are pretty much just 4/4 all the way through, and they're about as far from prog as you can get. def thrash metal.
Well officially there are only 2. However some other threads got turned into metal discussion hence why we created the official metal thread but it has died
