Black people/White people opinons

My brothers financee is black and i came over a few days after i started my dreads for a weekly visit to there house. as soon as she saw me she noticed and told me how much she hated dreads. we got to talking and after a while she said that the only way she would accept dreads is if they were clean and have neat parts but not on a white person. After that she started to take them out of hair (because i let her) and i didnt want to make her uncomfortable. she put some of her product she uses like spray conditioner and what not and got them out.

But my question is this, Does it really matter to most people that white people have dreads? Do the majority of black people feel this way? I know about the rastfarian religion of how hair has energy and what not, but how do you feel about this?

they were like three days. twist and pull method. its ok because i can always start them back up. i just felt really bad when she was explianing to me why she hates dreads let alone on white people whose hair is frizzy and unneat. she went into about how she wishes she has hair like me and hates putting so many chemicals on her hair. she was trying to embrace what i had instead of me trying something differnt, which was nice of her but its kinda uncomfortable. I think she is a doll though. she treats my brither nice and im happy for them

 

How was she trying to embrace what you had if she took them out?

You should've told her that you recognize her opinion and have no problem with it, but you don't agree so they are staying in.

well in regards to your question...your going to get very mixed answers. In the end it doesnt really matter what anyone says cuz if you want them and your heart is in the right place then you gotta do what ya gotta do ya know?! Ive met black people who dont understand why white people sport locks and Ive also met black people who are happy to see it....it's all relevant and just depends on the individual.

 

i know that, i just didnt want to have tention there. Embrace my hair naturally like when i come out of the shower it gets super curly, it doesn just be dready (well sorta)

 

Many races and cultures have had dreads before rastafarians or black people. Rastas just put spiritual meaning behind them.

So any black person or rasta who has a problem with white people wearing dreads is ignorant and has ignored history

 

i just dont want to raise any tention between her and myself. we are already not as close and i want to be closer over time, i feel like me having dreads will futher seperate us. plus my whole family thinks its nasty but really its not. duh. but all in all i should do what i want and dreads are what i want.

 

Just talk to her about how you respect her opinion, but you don't feel that she should force it on you; and then ask her why she feels that way and try to open discussion.
Maybe buy her a book on the history of dreads =D

 

i know why she feels that way. she doesnt like them because they look dirty and raggy and frizzy and un cared after. but i would take care of mine. she did say if i got them done at a hair salon they would be more acceptable looking

black guys with dreads love my dreads... but maybe it's cause black guys like me in general. I think it's all about how you rock them and of course they look crap at first.

 

Do what you like and tell her to fuck off. If your hairstyle is going to cause friction with her then she's not worth your time anyway.

 

I would have told the racist bitch to stfu and get over her elitist views and have some fucking respect for other people. How would she feel if you went straight to her and said, "I just hate black people and their hair. It's nappy, nasty, and dry. You need to straighten it and add shit loads of chemicals to make it appear like white people hair." I can't believe you actually let her comb them out. I would have said fuck you in principle. I would never let somebody else comb out my hair. Especially if she had just dissed me. I would have purposely kept them and made her look at them for a long time.
