Since a couple other people are making some music related threads, I thought I'd make one too. Anyone heard the album Colours, by Between the Buried and Me? It's fucking amazing, up there with Dark Side of the Moon for me, but prog metal instead of psychedelic rock. Any other similar bands you guys would recommend?
YES! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXGu81Rk1g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXGu81Rk1g My all time favourite band Clutch (IDK is they're prog metal or not, I'm no good with labels) I'm going to see them for the 4th time in July. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tIzP3Te05E&feature=related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKWEPs-5M1M&feature=related
Spiritual Beggars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSNMYNpxXIo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf9UVqaBQI8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKJ93KIjl1Q
Wouldnt clas Clutch as prog as prog generally differs from the normal rock / metal norms, either with differnt rhythms, time signatures or instrumentation, Clutch, from what I know is a more basic probably 4/4 time signature thing, not that its a bad thing, as I like Clutch and I don't particuarly like new Prog, I saw Tool and all the songs were very the same, just trying to be very progressive by sounding different to everyone else.
^^^Cool-thanks for the music lesson. I think I understand it now. After doing some reading, I've noticed that Clutch & Spiritual Beggars and a few of my other faves are classified as stoner rock.
ya they're different to stereotypical rock but they stick to the same general formula with quirky differences, where as modern prog generally seems to be people trying to be as different as they can...because they can ^^
Kyuss isn't progressive neither. It also fits in the stoner department. Even more than their newer band Queens of the stone age. I red somewhere that one of these guys of Kyuss (which is credites sometimes for starting the stoner rock genre by the way) pronounced stoner rock dead in like 2000 or something. This pissed me of immensely, haha, not only because I like the genre and don't want it to die but it's a very alive genre as well and still being played by lots of bands. As for prog, I'm not really a fan most of the time but I like a couple of bands. I think Ayreon is my favourite. Anybody aware of them? I especially like Into the electric castle. The Dream sequencer/Universal migrator has it's moments as well.
mudvayne, SOAD, and mastodon are listed as prog rock... hm.... BTBAM is awesome. Alaska is the shizzle
lol nothing proggy about any of those bands whoever listed those was on crack Prog is pretty lame anyways
Braying Donkey, your nuts are showing. I know it makes it easier to file music at Sam Goody, but I hate the arbitrary labels on music. Metal is metal, prog, stoner or whatever.
New prog seems to be 'nerdy'(?) musicians, who strive to be the most technically proficient but I don't have a huge scope on Prog bands as its not my cup of tea, as he asked Prog Metal instead of Prog Rock which is more Floyd, Prog Metal brings Dream Theatre to mind who confuse me, though they break stereotypes, they look like metal heads, play a sort of 80s rock lineup (?) with lots of synth+keys and then play music which is very classically rooted and I get the impression they're very full of themselves and they take turns showing off their musical skills, though what ever floats your boat I guess
I definitely disagree with that - there are some huge differences between the different types of metal, especially prog, as said before with the different time signatures and incorporation of different styles of music. It's pretty much just prog rock, stuff like Rush, but heavier. And Ayreon is really good, I agree. I'm sure you guys know about the main bands like Dream Theater and Opeth already, but they're also damn good.
