I have not seen a hippie for several years. I used to see them all the time. Barefooted people with bright coloured clothing and little intelligence walking around the city, doing normal things like normal people, then they all disappeared. What do you think is the cause of this phenomenon?

I agree, but this seems to be a cultural phenomenon. Perhaps emo culture is more suited to attention seeking, insecure individuals and therefore it has replaced hippie culture.

i'm sure it all goes through cycles. there were probably no hippes 15 years ago as well, then it became trendy and there were thousands, then it got old and emo took back over. maybe hippies will come back in another 10 years. or maybe hardcore punk will be the next retro trend. who knows?
