There are plenty of "contradictions" in any religion. Christianity has 2 creation stories, and different concepts like "Is there free will in heaven? *if there's only good in heaven*

In Hinduism many people get confused with concepts of Brahman and many gods, different paths to enlightenment, etc.

Buddhism is Hinduism refined, but lacks a lot of the flexibility of Hinduism.

But Christianity is extremely perversed, has books missing, and has been disassociated strongly from it's original message.

The main message of religions. Learn how to keep your focus on love, brotherhood, kindness. Learn how to place your whole self in these emotions. Don't focus on evil/bad because then your mind/emotions/body become a reflection of that. Don't stress because then all of your thoughts will reflect stress. Keep your mind in happiness and know that it will always be there, no matter what happens around you. Be healthy. Most of these religions are different explanations of these simple truths and the easiest method to get there.

If you are a slave and can smile, you are with God. If you are a Christian billionaire and always frown, you are without God.

actually, many Christians heed the essential message of Christ and try to live accordingly. they won't necessarily be found in churches though, or banded together with a loud voice which is heard by others. many Christians simply have a personal relationship with God and don't worry about what everyone else is doing.

    Right.
I would love to study all of those lost books to see what they're about, but to tell the truth, I wouldn't find them any more of a code to live my life by as the canon scripts. I think I've learned enough about the teachings of Christ to get the core message, and once you know that, the rest off the needling and nitpicking is irrelevant: Love each other as you would yourself and don't get up anyone else's ass but your own about being a "good Christian." If people just stuck to that rather than bending it to what they wanted it to mean, Christianity wouldn't have the rep it does, and I would bet there wouldn't be nearly as many bullshit wars, oppression of basic rights or angry atheists running around (not that every atheist is angry;)).

    some good replies, people!

    a) yes its true that God does not hate homosexuals, he merely hates the things that they willingly do. God does not hate murderers or adulterers but they are still 'wrong' (because of the things they do) and are subject to punishment or shame.

    b) It is also true that egyptian society at the time of moses people was rather similar to the hebrew law, but this doesnt change the fact that the world was still primarily pagan with multiple gods being worshipped (even though monotheistic worship was catching on in the west-Middle-East), and many generally primative traditions being indulged in by tribes across the land. It makes sense that Moses would haev been inspired by monotheistic cultures. But they, in themselves, represented new ways of thinking and did not represent the general culture of the world as known by people in the levant. The egyptians, even if their government forbade the worship of other gods than the central figure, still have a culture full of ancient pagan rituals and moralities. So I would retain my sentiment that moses' position considered the egyptians confused (because of their focus on lesser importance and on personal pleasures - which the israelites did not have much access to, being slaves) and abominable (in the sense of practicing sins), even if this sentiment was mixed with societal desire for the wealth and prosperity of egyptian civilisation.

    c) Ive been realising how much of christianity is not christs word at all! It is clearly apostle's word. I mean look at the new testament. Only a very small part, about 200 pages, talks about jesus' life. Most of the remainder of the new testament is made up of personal ideologies of traveling preachers, each who wanted to become an influential person, each who wanted to spread the word of jesus in such a way that would grant them recognition and have people remember them for starting churches.

Im pointing the finger at Paul too.. the bible should probably be renamed the word of Paul, not of Jesus, considering how much of the new testament is comprised by Paul's completely baseless ramblings about his interpretation of the word of god.

Almost everything that talks about renouncing the OLD covenant is spoken by people other than Jesus, who says that the law of god must not be broken.

At any rate, this thread is moer about God HAting gay sex, than his disallowance of it. He gives a reason to not do all of the other things, non of which are 'god hates that'. You can always go the 'god works in mysterious ways' route but then you may as well stick your thumb up your bum. If you are going to take any of the bible seriously you must take it all seriously. Because it all has the same basis. Of course, this includes taking into consideration all versions of the bible and the people who edited it.

personally I think the main motive was to avoid male rape (men were in power and probably cared much less about raping unmarried women.. but cared very strongly about what other people could do to them) by making the notion of males fucking males wrong on a rather fundamental, unexplained level.

but yer thats just an idea.

It is very significant that God hates men having sex with other men, whereas every other sexual act is wrong because of a reason.

I would like to end this post on a cautionary note:

Many people say that it is silly to obsess over words in an old text that has been edited. But the bible is the single source of most of the world's belief system.

So if you think it is stupid to take the bible seriously, it is like saying that you dont take most of the world seriously. If you dont take most of the world seriously, thats fine, you just deserve to be treated in the same way next time you feel a certain way about something. However I wish to take the world seriously because each person takes their own world rather seriously and I want to connect with other people and that includes christians.

It was all about reproduction Bill. It was all about reproduction and it still is. I think God is some kinda genetisist amongst everything elce. Hes beradin for genes. Its somthin bout genetics anyhow. Mabey not even for physical traits exclusivly. Mabey for genetics that do mental stuff and things like that too. He dont want you to be a homo cause theres no future in it.

I've always found the argument that The Bible is not homophobic, just misunderstood, to be really really tenuous. I know that it's fairly common religious practice to use the tiniest sliver of doubt as the foundation of a whole argument, but it looks pretty fishy to the outsider.

The passage you've cited really isn't very frank, and I have to say, if one small part of the Bible that seems explicitly anti-gay wasn't, you'd think at some point someone would have bothered to write a better translation that made this fact clear.

Personally, I'd rather Christians just pick a side - either they get that bit changed, or they admit that they prefer it the way it is. Why is that so hard?

I'm not sure really what your point is but the way I look at it is like this; I could like a murderer, I could be best friends with a murderer and I could even love a murderer but I could still hate murder and that is the way I look at homosexual acts; I could like a person who commits homosexual acts, I could even be best friends with a person who commits homosexual acts and say in the case of a fleshly brother or sister who commits homosexual acts, I could even love them but I could still hate homosexual acts.

The truth is the Bible teaches you to love the person while you hate the bad things a person may do.

But what exactly about it makes it bad?

I could imagine why it might be bad because not all of our desires are necessarily good for us, and may be harmful to engage in. But I just want us to get into the WHY it is bad and then go into that.

We can have a desire to get slapped, doesn't mean that it would be good for us to engage in that desire of being slapped. Just as an example. Maybe that desire can melt away in time? And once it does, we may look back at that desire and think that it was odd for us to ever want that and be glad that we avoided it.

Its not for us its for God. Its bad cause theres no future in it. Its all bout genes. Gods porpos for us was to multiply. Theres no future in homosexuality. One of the first things God told Adam and Eve to do was to multiply. Thats what He had for us as far as porpos goes. To engage in homosexuality go's against Gods origional plan. God has a plan as we all know. The closer we look the more we'l see that His plans got alot to do with genetics. Adam and Eve we'r the origional Hebrews wernt they? Jews rite? Lookat how the devil thined their genepool durrin the holicast. Adam and Eve we'r the first Jews, and the guys that wer formed outside of the garden we'r the gentiles I gues. They we'r made inconsequentually durrin the creation. Theyr the cave men that people find that are tensa thousandsa years old. Adam and Eve we'r Gods chozen genes. He was workin with them when the devil screwed Him up.

I would say that the type of person who would commit a murder would be unlikely to have a particularly likeable character, but then, what do I know?

So what do you hate most about homosexual acts?

It depends. It depends if that person murdered in a moment of complete rage, self defense, or did murder with malice but later on feels sorry for the act. The same man that murders people can be an animal rights activist and very good with children, as an example. They can still be a good friend. People aren't 2d characters.

If we associate people with their actions past actions, it may lead to a misrepresentation of the individual.

The actions need to separate themselves from the person because the person is not always their actions but they are whatever they are at the moment that you engage them in. Which is why it is important to remain focused in love at all times.

    K. Do you hate anything else about them, or do you just not like them because God doesn't like them?

If you are asking personally, I grew up believing; live and let live and still feel pretty much that way but after studying the Bible, if someone asks what the Bible says about the subject, I tell them that it seems from what the Bible says; God disapproves of homosexual acts.

As for my personal choice in the matter, homosexuality just doesn't do it for me.
