for a couple friends, myself, and my sister. roasting a whole chicken, making green bean casserole, and wild rice. also, i got a bottle of wine, and looked it up when i got home. montebuena 2006, a spanish red wine. pretty affordable (~$10/bottle) and for the price range its got some good reviews. this won't be fancy or anything, but it should be a nice dinner
Can you guys get good Canadian wine down there? Sawmill Creek makes a really nice rosé wine, and it's like 14 bucks for 1.5 litres (quart and a half, roughly? 3 pints?) Jackson Triggs and Peelee Island are nice too, and inexpensive.
good canadian wine? :leaving: anyway, more people are coming over than i thought. to compensate, i'm making baked potatoes instead of wild rice, since i have more potatoes than wild rice the chicken is roasting in the oven currently, stuffed and topped with very coarsely chopped red onion, and seasoned with garlic, rosemary, thyme, celery seed, fresh ground black pepper, salt, and sage. its smelling nice already, too :cheers2:
anyway, got that bottle of apparently nice rioja, and if my sister wants wine there is a sweet wine that her friend brought over (wont touch it after tasting the other bottle she gifted us, its like grape juice....exactly what my sister would want) and one of my friends may bring some wine as well. anyway, my friends dont really drink much, so one bottle should suffice, but there will likely be more than that anyway. but yeah, normally if i get a bottle of wine, its just for me...assuming its a normal sized bottle of wine in the 11-15%ABV range
anyway, dinner was a smashing success. my first ever roasted chicken came out super delicious (especially the legs! and i dont even like dark meat) the potatoes were good, and i've never had good luck with baking potatoes before. and the green bean casserole was scrumptious. there is just enough meat on the bones left on the chicken (and some onions and broth) to boil the meat off of the bones for soup or rice or something, and theres some casserole left over which will be good for lunch, and theres even a little wine left over for tomorrow night (sister had her sweet wine, and a friend brought over some white, so for my mostly non-drinking friends there was plenty to be had, and between my rioja and his white and my rum, i am pretty damn buzzed) all in all it was a good night. had lots of company, it was fun to entertain, and even more fun to cook, and everyone enjoyed the food enough that it was pretty damn quiet throughout the meal, as everyone was so busy stuffing their faces it would have been nice to have had more chicken because i know people like their meat, but hey i was on a budget and made a very nice meal for six people on less than twenty bucks, so i'm pretty damn happy
Ugh, that sounds so good. We're having chili cheese fries and a bitchy Daniel because he has to make them and it's turning out to be more work than expected, lol.
The pan he was using sucks ass and the deep fryer needed to be cleaned and we couldn't find the sieve to filter the grease...I didn't even know we had a sieve to tell you the truth, lol.
this meal, in reality, was very time consuming and there was lots of waiting and such, and i had to time the items properly to ensure everything would be ready at once. but all in all, the preparation was extremely minimal. rinse chicken clean, add seasoning all over and inside the cavity. roast chicken with foil on dish, remove foil for last half an hour (would have been better with seasoning stuffed under the skin, but we ate skin-on so it was just easier to rub it on top and let it do what it could)......that was the hardest part of the meal besides timing it all. baked potatoes with butter, salt and pepper were a great filler, the other two dishes were tastier but less filling given what i had to work with and how many people i was cooking for. but nobody left hungry, a few of us had seconds on some items, there was wine and good company. it was easy in terms of actual work....just time consuming. and even if i'd bought the chicken, it would have been cheap. whole birds are cheaper ounce for ounce than breasts, thighs, drumsticks, or whatever. the more seperated and processed the meat, the more expensive it is in general. it was a four pound chicken, give or take, and the price was a bit under 10 bucks. (i'm guessing 6 or 7...it was barely under 4lbs, and it was just under 2 bucks per pound) green bean casserole was dirt cheap, and so are potatoes. all things considered, i learned tonight that you can make a fucking delicious meal on a budget, and if you aren't feeding an army you can feed two or three people for a lot longer. it was a good night...now good night
sounds yummy. there are many, many delicious ways to prepare burgers. and hell, even the simplest means of doing so are downright wonderful if done right. meat, a little cheese (maybe), mustard, onion, pickle, a little ketchup....delicious
The colander is plastic...and has rather large slits in it. Pretty ineffective. But the potato frying has commenced and the chili heating will be under way soon. Honestly, I'm pretty sure he was just bitching that he had to cook. Haha.
i made dinner way late tonight, didn't get home from fabric store until 8 o'clock. but it still tasted good. we had ribs and mash potatoes and brussel sprouts.
