Simple question really. No pointers as to what direction I'd like this thread to take, so, why is it that people get married?

    Because its convenient.
    Because they're religious.
Because society wants them to ( which is probably the lamest answer ever  ).
    Because they're in love (?).

The point is - I don't know

    It's a display of commitment.

I don't really believe in marriage, I think we are capable of committing just fine without a legally binding contract, but having that contract gives you many more rights as a spouse, so I'll probably end up getting married if I find a girl I'd like to commit to.

Because "standing in front of our friends and family and declaring our love for each other and getting a peice of paper stating that we are now officially 'one' is just so important to us" :)

I don't believe in marriage but I don't not believe in marriage.

It's safer than common law in some places....and cheaper than a lawyer.

Living together is still technically illegal in some states (including this one) which can cause big paperwork problems with things like mortgages, deeds, apartment leases, insurance, etc. Otherwise, living together would be fine with me.

People who live together and think they are oh so smart and modern for not getting married are really foolish. If you do split up you still need a lawyer and it's every bit as messy as a regular divorce. If you don't want to get married, then don't live with a partner, because you will be married whether you like it or not. A friend just went through this with a live-in...cost him a pretty penny to have her put out of his house, too, because she wouldn't leave and he could not make her without getting a lawyer involved.

I don't care who doesn't like the idea of marriage, I don't base my life decisions on what other people do. I am happily married 11 years, we decided to have kids so we got married first.

Let's get married and we'll have free run of North America...

    Here's a interesting thought
The origins of marriage comes from the serfs.
The serfs needed to ask permission from the feudal lords to get married.
It was known as Fornication under consent of the King.
    FUCK for short.

Getting married is like asking for permission to make love to the PTB.

If the powers that be can make us think that we need to ask permission to have a partner they can make us think anything.

    Think about it.

Living for the last 23 years with the same women with out the "Benefit" of paper .

    FREE YOURSELF

    Peace
    Dan
