This election has seen sometime come about that is rarely seen in the American political landscape, a total rejection of a party. Republicans are now in control of all 3 branches of the federal government. Democrats have lost almost all power they had in swaying republican policies. What caused this rise in Neo-Conservatism? Bringing a moral arguement into politics with the issue of gay marriage? Discontent with democratic domestic policies? The minority leader of the Senate even lost, Thune is now the senator of South Dakota. Mongiardo failed in his campaign for Senate here in Kentucky, now Bunning can further aid Bush and his policies. So what are your opinions on the sudden shift to red in America?
We (liberals) are the minority, it's simple as that. We will be ignored, persecuted, and disenfranchised for a while, and then the political pendulem will move back to the left, and then on to the right again.
im moving. definately. i cant stand our facist government, and i cant stand the portion of people here who are greedy and self centered. the only decision im making is to go to jamaica, australia, costa rica, brazil, or amsterdam
9/11 has caused the uprise of neoconservatism, obviously. 9/11 was the excuse for the neocons to launch their wars. As long as people accept neoconservatism, the more powerful the neocons will get. Wars abroad. Police state at home. It's the new freedom.
I suspect that you already know the answers to your questions, but they are summed up in one word: Nazi-ism.
Can anyone point to a good link which might enlighten me on the neoconservative movement. I see and hear the term bandied about left and right but I'm having a hard time distinguishing it from shit that's been going on since at least the Nixon adminstration so I don't see what's so neo about it. Anyhoo...if anyone can send me in an informative direction, I'd appreciate it.
Right, your 15 and your're gonna move to 1 of these cities or countries. And Jamacia, Costa Rica and Brazil, these are vacation spots, these places are very poor places compared to America to go live in. Have fun.
Right that's why they took the House way back in '95. Right after 9/11 in 1995 created a rise in power is that what you are saying here? Launch their wars? How many Democrats voted to use force against Iraq Pressed_Rat? You have to understand that people aren't merely accepting conservatism, they are voting for conservatism. Obviously. Police state? If you want to see a police state give a shout out to East Berlin. Go read Timothy Ash's The File. We, no matter how you pervert it, do not live in a police state.
we may not live in police state, but we live in a country of isolated cowards who don't have a real grasp on reality. HOODWINKED Old fashioned conservatism sounds good right now. there is some serious doublespeak going on right now, the right villifying anyone even slightly to the left as a liberal while their administration spends more than any liberal ever....utter hypocrisy.
No I think that was the contract with America wasn't it? Very good propaganda piece... A number of democrats voted to give the PRESIDENT authority to use troops based on information that was badly scewed by the administration. They wern't voting to use force - the president asked them to vote so that he could respond to whatever was needed. Not yet. Just wait. It gets closer everyday. I have friends who have been questioned already. It will not be long.
quote: have friends who have been questioned already. It will not be long. please tell me more about this
I have three firends in Seattle and NY. They are all relatively active in groups who criticize the policies of this administration. In one case agents came by work to ask questions. In the other cases police showed up at meetings to gather information and they followed these two around during the days before and during the Republican National Convention. They are convinced surveillance must have been in place since they were so informed as to meeting locations and assembly points.
The seeds of what we see today was germinated during the height of the Democatic's power. In 1992, Democrats had both Houses of Congress and won the White House. A backlash of Hillary's attempt in 1994 to force her version of Healthcare Democrats lost both Houses by 1996. In fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go all the way back to 1964 election. Barry Goldwater, arguably the first nationally known "Conservative" lost in a landslide against Pres. Johnson. The first initial indications of today's conservative success could be found in the ashes of the 1964 elections. During the 70's we had chronic inflation, tenacious unemployment, ending of our involvement in Vietnam, raising gas prices to the unheard of levels of 70cents - $1 a gallon, Iran was holding U.S. embassy employees as hostages. It was no surprise Pres. Reagan was elected in a Landslide after the fecklessness of the Pres. Carter years. Pres. Nixon and Ford were Republicans but they weren't conservative. Also the rejection of the Fairness doctrine on the airwaves promoted openly partisan radio such as Rush Limbaugh. Radio depends on the consumer market. The conservatives such as Rush Limbaugh would not have been near as successful if they didn't serve the market place. If the ratings didn't support them, then they would have lasted over the last 10 - 14 years (whatever). President Reagan proved a conservative could get elected to National office running as a conservative. And this was prior to "Conservate Talk Radio". It seems the Dems have to deny any Liberal leanings to make any headway.
Pretty good summary. I think abortion, embryonic research and same-sex relationships have been slowly but surely catalyzing as issues that drive the relgious right. In 1990 86% of Americans identified themselves as Christian, however many of these Christians were quite liberal as these major issues were just beginning to take on the political significance they have today. In 2001 those identifying themselves as Christian has dropped to 76.5% but a much larger percentage of these people vote on mostly social issues. These soical issues have been adopted by the religious right and therefore the churches and people are made to feel that they need to vote a certain way to please God. (Ironically not the way of love and tolerance.) Already the number of people classifying themselves as religious is about 50%. Between 2004 and 2006 it is estimated that it will become the minority. We can only hope... Then people may begin to think for themselves again. http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_prac2.htm
Over the next several years, the seeds of a resurrected Democratic party could be in the offering. The Democrats would have to take a hard look at themselves and make some fundemental changes. Ramming their agenda down the throats via Judicial mandates will continue to have a gagging effect by the voting public. This could be a side effect of the Gore campaign attempting to sue their way to White House. They must convince the American people through dialog and debate in order to change the hearts and minds of the public. The Conservatives have been continueously challenged since 1964 and gotten, through repitition and practice, good with their responses. Failing this, the Democrats will go down the same path the Whig party in 1854. Ironically, the reminates of the Whig party reformed itself into the Republican Party.
Spending is a problem with the administration, I think we'll see a cap on that here pretty soon; but with the exception of the war. The leftists are villifying those who support the war. What is HOODWINKED?
fooled by smokescreen issues. I think. I'll amend my prior phrase. They were smokescreened from the real issues by false promises regarding social issues.
Neo-con. Neo-con? We were asking that question four years ago. This govt isn’t neo-con. It is theo-con. Keep up folks!
Neo-Liberalism is just as bad. After all its a pro-corporate system in which social and ecological problems that are a result of it are never taken into consideration. It's what's responsible for the class war that goes on throughout the world on a daily basis, and increases everyday substantially. It turns Americans and people of other nations basically into consumers rather than their status as citizens. I would also take that into consideration because it plays a relatively evil role in what capitalism has resulted in, and is the basis for a lot of today's conservatives, neo-conservatives, moderates, and even liberals who don't care enough about the world as a whole, but focus on how they, alone are affected by capitalism.
