Hey everyone, under normal circumstances i wouldnt have chose to bore you with an essay but given the election and its relevance to my essay I thought i would post it and see what you all think of it.

The essay topic is Do you think character matters in a President?

The essay isnt that in depth because it was only supposed to be 350 words, although I stretched it to over 500 words.

Here it is, any feedback is welcomed.

If I were able to vote in this current election I would base my vote on two characteristics. The conventional quality of where a candidate stands on issues would be one quality, however to win my vote a candidate would also have to illustrate character. The issues surrounding the world may change from day to day, but a person’s character is enduring. In this current presidential election I am inclined to base my vote more heavily on character because the existing issues are of great difficulty for both runners to excel in.

“Like father, like son” is a commonly heard saying used in our language. I believe that this quote accurately describes the personality of our current president, George W. Bush. His father, who had little, if any character, taught George everything he knows about politics. Over ten years ago when he was in office, he vetoed numerous bills such as the family leave bill, which would have permitted workers to have unpaid leaves from work for births or medical crisis’s in their families. This bill and others would have provided assistance to countless people including poor women and men, young kids that work for small incomes and single parents. George W. Bush Jr. has followed in his father’s footsteps by cutting money for several programs including funding for research into renewable energy sources, abandoning a campaign pledge to invest $100 million for rain forest conservation, slicing $200 million from work force training for dislocated workers and a number of others. I dislike the personality illustrated by President Bush because he takes away money from credible, aiding programs for the American people.

Unlike President Bush, Senator John Kerry has not been given a free ride into politics. While George Bush was partying and slouching around his Texas Air Force Base during the Vietnam War, John Kerry was serving his country in one of the most dangerous areas possible. Simply being patriotic and fighting in the war does not give you character though. What took away from Bush’s character was that he used his last name to slink out of duty. John Kerry exemplified extraordinary character by challenging authority at an extremely unstable period in America. By voicing his concerns and disapproval of the Vietnam War made him unique and bold as a politician. He did not rely on anyone else except himself to escalate through the world of politics. By sticking with his issues and rallying troops to dispute the war and its purpose showed character.

When I consider the paths that each nominee has taken on the journey to candidacy the major difference is the consistency of character. From the first time John Kerry spoke about politics over thirty years ago, he has shown character and diligence in his beliefs. On the other hand, George W. Bush has used the power of his family to guide him to candidacy. He does not have any vivid feature of character. In conclusion, I strongly believe that character is a significant trait that every presidential candidate should possess as it has a major impact on every decision he or she makes.
