"Linger" and "Dreaming My Dreams" by the Cranberries are to beautifully written and performed songs. Never fail to put me on the verge of tears

    Evenesence - My Immortal

Reminds me of an old relationship and always gets me upset(esp after a drink) apart from the little guitar bit at the end

NIN - Hurt is pretty sensitive as well

Epitaph by King Crimson from Court Of The Crimson King.
    Truly a melancholy masterpiece IMHO.

Also Lalena from Deep Purple's self titled release.
Not a well known one but DAMN it's beautiful.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Lennon's "Working Class Hero." That's probably the most depressing song I've ever heard.

    Agreed. I love that song.

Changes by Black Sabbath From Vol. 4 (I think)
which is just Ozzy on vocal and (I could be wrong) Tony Iommi on piano and mellotron.

Seconds by The Human League from Dare.

The closing portion of The Gates of Delerium called Soon by Yes from Relayer.
The mood of this one I find mournful yet it's also the post-war part of this songs storyline.

Grim Travellers by Bruce Cockburn from Humans.
Politically charged lyrics like 'If I Had A Rocket Launcher'
