Man, I have to go camping. I've been asking friends to go already for about two months, and I haven't been camping since....the Gettysburg reenactment last summer, I think - which was a blast authentically camping/living it up and playing field music Civil War style for the weekend. None of my friends seem to really find the time to go, so I think I might drive to the Blue Ridge mountains this weekend, find a spot and pitch a tent for the weekend. If I don't go to the mountains, I may just go to the local woods.

It'll also be a good way to see if I've got everything I need for Bonnaroo. :D

I think that's a fine idea. I've camped out many times by myself. It's nice to have friends to talk to, but the need to camp is far more important, at least to me anyway.

I bet the reenactment\historical camp is a blast, something I'd like to try someday.

    Have fun and be safe.

Hey! If you come up to PA let me know.. there's an awesome state park in south/central area..
and I can relate. It can be hard to get my friends together to go camping.

Oh. It was a blast. I've played field music since I was about 14 - Fifes & Drums, but I've mostly played colonial/revolutionary war field music and I started with Yorktown Fifes and Drums. I went to the Gettysburg reenactment (I don't usually do reenactments) to try it out, and it as a blast. I'm not a fan of the Civil war music like I am revolutionary war, but it was still an experience - but waking up at 5 in the morning and having to play Reveille was a pain.

Cameras weren't really allowed, but I managed to get a few pictures of the camp and all...

It was miserable hot and I was tired after a long march and playing.

Go for it! I camp and hike by myself all the time. To me, the essence of wilderness is solitude. That's when you really learn about yourself.

The Gettysburg thing sounds like fun, too :)

Have you been to the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area in North Carolina? It isn't well known because there are no paved roads that go there, so most tourists never see it. It is about as rugged as any gorge you will find in the east, and you don't see many people on the trails, except close to the falls. Tent camping only.
