Can you run 100 miles in one go with bare feet? http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/diet_and_fitness/article6160557.ece
i have walked 24 miles in one day... not much of a jogging or running fan... pretty amazing that anyone can do it!
What a coincidence. I was at the mall during lunch today to pick up some Clinique for my wife (B-Day). I walked up to the Clinique counter at Belk and placed my order. The nice looking lady behind the counter commented that she saw I was barefooted and started a very pleasant conversation. It seems she and her husband are avid runners and just last night, he husband was discussing the possibility of running barefoot. She was asking me a ton of questions and she was genuinely interested in what I had to say. Now, I don't run bf, but I do hike bf. I mentioned that, despite what most podiatrists say, shoes actually harm your feet because the muscles in the foot are not allowed to strengthen. I said I like to bf hike because hiking, to me, is a sensory activity. You have the sights, sounds, smells, and the only way to really enjoy a hike is to feel the multitude of textures that hiking offers. I also mentioned that being bf nearly 24/7 causes you to be more aware of your surroundings than ordinary people are. She was very interested in how long I had been a barefooter and how long it took to walk on most surfaces without discomfort. I told her that it is very interesting to walk around the mall and feel the difference in floor temperatures in various places. You can actually tell where mechanical systems are running under the floor by the temperature and vibrations. We concluded our conversation and I believe she will actually give it a try. She said she was originally from Oregon where there are probably more people like me than not.
I'm so out of shape that I can barely *walk* a couple or three miles without getting tired out. My feet will get sore not because of being barefoot, but because of the walking...they'd be even more sore with shoes!
jeez. man you are just 25, trust me, it is time to put an end to this, if possible. i am talking on top of experience and not to annoy you, it is definitely worth the effort, multiple times worth.
I'm fighting against obesity that I've had pretty much my *whole* life, literally. My younger sister was born about 10 months after me, and my mom told me stories about how I'd finish her bottle for her, and how I'd angrily throw down my bottle when I was finished, since there wasn't any more milk in it. Seriously, my being out of shape started when I was a baby. Anyway, I probably should have qualified what I meant by not being able to walk 2-3 miles without getting tired. If I take short breaks along the way, I can walk quite a long way and keep a moderately fast pace while walking. If I were to walk slowly, I probably could walk 2-3 miles without a break and without running short of breath. Unfortunately, slow walking bores me I generally like to try to get a nice pace going.
same for me man, except my story was a little bit different: as a baby i did not eat at all so my mother had the bad idea of leaving me without milk for a couple of days ... since then i was doomed lol my hunger never went away. older, i had to cope with the perpetual fight against fat and found a solution in sports. when i had no longer the opportunity to do heavy workout (and boy i pushed fucking hard) also because a bad disc hernia came out, i had again to measure bread by grams , oil by teaspoons, and all that shit. like now. so i understand your situation, just saying that after all it is worth the effort. p.s. in my personal experience no other training can build up the muscles in your calves more than continuous barefooting, without comparison.
I definitely think barefooting helps me out a lot. I also think that I need to dare to enter a grocery store again - barefoot or not. I'm kind of nervous about going to the groceries barefoot because a lot of them have NS3 signs. But I really want to strive to do *all* my shopping barefoot. I could go to the overpriced health-foods store in town, and it would be more beneficial food that I'd buy. However, I have no job this summer. I guess I gotta just do it, with SBL health dept. letters in hand. I do think that walking is great exercise, and I really enjoy it. I won't try the groceries for a couple of weeks since I'm gonna spend some time with my parents helping them out with their major yard work (deck repair and staining a wooden fence). But come June, I'll have to try the grocery store thing. Thanks for your support man! Sorry I've been off the hipforums lately. I tend to do that - one day on, a few days off. One other thing I've noticed after watching "The Biggest Loser" is that men who used to be fat and get skinny have a particular shape to them. Their necks look a bit elongated, and any fat they've got on their face kind of takes a shape like they used to be fat. It kind of looks artificial to me. I hope to avoid that kind of thing. Perhaps if I lose the weight very slowly, it'll go down. I'm also gonna try quitting smoking - with a nicotine patch, since last time I tried cold turkey, I got really depressed. I think I need something to help me out. Then perhaps I think I need to go back to carrot sticks again. They're a nice, healthy snack, and unlike yogurt, they actually fill me. I dunno why I always have this yo-yo struggle with weight. I'll get pumped about losing weight during the summer, then I'll get busy in the fall and quit. I guess I need to get a routine that's easy to keep up and that keeps on staying fun. I'm gonna avoid the gym and walk around town It's better to get fresh air, too.
Go for it! I shop barefoot all the time. I recently reported an employee at one grocery store saying I should wear shoes, but when I started questioning her she quickly backed down. Othwise, I've probably been to 15-20 grocery stores - no problem! As one person pointed out, the Kroger chain seems to be barefoot friendly (I believe they're "Dillon's in your area).
