well i was naming guitarists as a whole, for lead it could be michael schenker, paul gilbert, tony macalpine, and others
Im shocked nobody has said Rory Gallagher yet....... Rory Gallagher is probably one of the most influental guitarists of all time, being praised and 'admired' by pretty much every 'great' guitarist there is, but Rory himself isnt that well known. Any fans of guitarists, check it out.
Good one man. I saw Rory live at the Denver Auditorium. Really a great blues-rock guitarist. Frank Marino is another. He is my greatest influence besides Hendrix ZW
Ha Ha Frank Zappa's music is the best! He never got the radio play he deserved, the industry just fucking shunned him. Because of that, many people were robbed of the chance to be exposed to his musical genius. I consider him to be the greatest composer of our time. ZW eace:
I liked Rory, and in my circles, Rory is not underated, as most know him very well. I think Rory's main problem was his song writing ability. His songs were not well written. Kind of like Eric Johnson, a great guitarist, but just cant write the music very well.
While I agree with you on the majority of Rory Gallaghers songs I gotta disagree with Million Miles Away which I think is one of the best songs of all time. Peace brother.
Leo Kottke and Wayne Kramer are my two nominations for most underrated guitar players of the 70s and 80s.
Alvin Lee is the one who really got me interested with rock n roll and did what queen failed to do so far. to start to play guitar, and i'm still enjoying it! I'll throw up Omar Rodriguez Lopez from the Mars Volta though. That guy is a modern day rock god in his own kinda way. I love to freak to his guitarwork just as much as I do with people like hendrix, santana, knopfler, gilmour and hazel.
There you go! Trower is my favorite 6 string slinger of all-time! Dewar could easily be mentioned in underrated vocalists too.
Yes, come to think of it, Frank's quite underrated too.....perhaps it's because he's never really in a spotlight by choice
As I recall " Bridge of sighs" (Trowers 1st solo effort) received a lot of radio play when it debuted. I don't know how popular Frank Marino was in Canada, but in my neck of the woods (Denver) no one I knew had ever heard of him. This was 1976 and Mahogany Rush IV had just been released. Frank had already released 4 albums and yet no state-side radio play until Cal-Jam '79?(that performance was awesome). If you consider both Frank and Robins similarities to Hendrix's sound, maybe the industry just decided Frank was superfluous and simply neglected promoting him properly. Too bad... (sigh) ZW
