nocc'd these jars up about 10 days ago and they basically look exactly the same as day 1. i looked at them on day 4 and 7 and its all the same. any ideas what it might be? i think i just got a shitty syringe.

Just give it a little bit. Sometimes they can take a couple weeks or even more than a month to germinate. Did you make sure to let the drop of spores run down the side of the jar, or did you inoculate the inside of the substrate? If you inoculated the inside, you could theoretically not see anything till it's almost done.

Where did you order your spores from?

probably the most popular shroom i see being grown on different websites is Golden Teachers and B+. Ralphsters and sporeworks are some different sites you might find useful

Take the foil off your jars! If you have tape over the inocculation holes, take that off as well. Your jars are not getting the gas exchange they need.

they grow fine with the foil, but if you're really worried tyvek is your friend.

Definitely tyvek FTW. Or medical (micropore) tape. Tyvek's free, though.

tyvek nor micropore, nor even the foil is needed for this project.

If you read the pftek verbatim, then you should understand three things:

    1. The verm barrier is a protective barrier that seperates the contams, from the mycelium. It is the ONLY barrier you need, no foil, no tyvek, just the verm, do not even tape over the inoculation holes with micropore, the holes are there for simple minute gas exchange. Since you're colonizing, mycelium prefers co2.

    2. Remove the foil pre inoculation, then throw it away... period. The foil is used to keep unwanted moisture out, and the wanted moisture in, that is all, nothing more, nothing less. If you put the foil back on, then your choking the mycelium, it needs GAS exchange, not FAE, not fresh air exchange, but GAS.

    3. Do not use Tyvek from the USPS, it takes things to a whole new level, as it's against federal law to use these envelopes in a matter for which they are not intended, things go into the feds hands real quick, if those were found.

The verm barrier is there so you don't have to use the foil, the tape, or the tyvek...

while the verm blocks out contams, it allows a "filter" if you will, for minute gas exchange.

    hope this helps

oh yeah, spores101 has a bad rep, ralphsters or sporeworks are your go tos.

however, you SHOULD see some sort of colonization at day 14.
If not, then you gotta start thinking......

"Did I wait until the jars were COMPLETELY COOLED?? Before I inoculated??"

or were you in a rush, and the jars were still warm.

Did you let the Pressure Cooker go idle on it's own? or did you speed it up by taking the stop cock off it????

this allows WAY Too much moisture to escape from the jar, making it difficult for the spores to take hold.

    MY BEST GUESS

    is it's the spores

spores101 sells spores for MICROSCOPY purposes, now, i know ALL vendors say that, BUT

the thing is, at a 0.5% SOLUTION, supplies just enough spores, to find them under a scope/SEM..

so they did their job, and you can't complain...

if you're trying to get to a pure monoculture, then this is a good idea to use, but you'll want to start on agar, then take wedges and do grain to grain transfers from there, but im guessing you aren't at that stage yet.

Best bet, when you buy a syringe, is to also have an LC ready to inoculate, so that if none of the jars make it, maybe the LC will, then you can start again...

gotta love wikidbrew lc, at least we do!!!

    hah.

    peace.

The verm barrier just isn't enough, though. And the holes can let evaporation occur. Foil won't choke the mycellium. You don't seal it up. It just keeps shit from falling into the jar, and it does a damn good job.

im about 3 weeks since innoculation, and im about 20-25% colonized. it will take about 2 weeks just to start seeing any white spots.

Looks like you have a moisture problem. Your jars appear to be a bit more saturated than you would want. How many cc's did you innoculate in each hole?

Sporeworks is a MUCH better vendor.
