I'm wondering if playing with my hair is detrimental to the dread-forming process. I fiddle with it all the time, especially the loose hair at the back. I'll even catch myself pulling loose hairs out of the dreads that are forming! Is this bad?
Does anyone else play with their hair constantly?

I would reccomend training yourself not to fiddle with it. Or try to reduce the amount of time spent fiddling to just a couple minutes a day or something. Small amounts of fiddling can be good cuz dreads need friction....but to much can be detrimental. Unless your trying to prevent congos...I wouldnt pull hair out of dreads that are forming either. Just let it be....if its to hard not to play with...get a tam and wear it daily.

when i first had my dreadlocks made, i would fiddle with them day in day out, because i couldnt get used to the feeling of totally matted hair. Then after a while i realised that less touching is best, and yes, in a way, is detramental, fiddling with them would cause knotting hairs to break or slip apart if anything :)

I'm not a fiddler, but I'm a scratcher. I start scratching my scalp and can't stop. My mom was here this week and she's a hair stylist and said that is why I have the dandruff like flakes and that I need to stop if I want the white fluffies to disappear. Every time she caught me scratching she would remind me... it was a blessing! It made me aware of how often I was doing it. Maybe we need some sort of an OCD thread for us that can't stop touching our dreads/scalp. lol

am i the only one who was disappointed that this wasnt a thread about playing fiddles?

to the op, you should probably try to leave them alone a bit more. but im sure they will lock up anyway.

HAHA! that actually made me chuckle!
Did I read correctly that fiddling/scratching provokes dandruff?

I know my dandruff was provoked from scratching my damn itchy scalp! But I have been resisting the urge (or trying very hard to) and it seems to be improving drastically. And it seems to have gone full circle because I do not itch much anymore.

I assume there are different forms of dandruff though and this was part of the cause of mine.

    cool!
Perhaps I'll give it a try. I only get dandruff like now and then... so perhaps it starts after I scratch.

I quit getting dandruff and buildup when I switched to just using water when I was my hair. I no longer use any Bronners or baking soda for my hair. Water does just as good of job as neutralizing smells all the while not removing the balance of natural oils like soaps do. If you wash your hair and continually find the dandruff comes back in a couple days or never goes away try washing with water. For the first three weeks my head itched like crazy. But I have been almost 2 months with no soaps and my dandruff is gone totally.
