agreed 100%. saw them on my birthday this past july. faced for the first time and was blown away. it would be amazing to think what these guys would have done had they been devoted to creating their own songs instead of re-doing the dead's but it still takes nothing away from how legitimate these fellas are.

I was lucky enough to grow up in the 70s as an older teen . ready for the genral admission concert floor nyway. and my parents ere the type that let me do what i wanted . Im glad my own kids were not like this.I grow pot sold acid. blablabla. I could pay for what I wanted to do. I grow up in new england . really i mean realy small area which eratated me, not enough people.Every month in springfield mass. or hartford conn. there would be some kind of concert goin on.
But augest ment " the Dead were comin to Umass (univercity ofmass at amherst) amherst was its own little hippie hang out type town. Good place to know if ya had nothin to do and was bored. could find someone to tell ya a good story. Keg party somewhere type place.
They used "the football stadium" for the show. I don't even remember who many people it held.10,000 maybe? 3,000 for all i know. seemed like 10,000 when your 15 yrs old. some of the coolest cars Ive ever seen.Painted vw's and vans everywhere. The people seemed no different to me because I came from a little farming town that was " over run with them long hairs". you always knew if ya couldn't find someone with alittle pot. someone would be clean'in out their bowl and smokin the resin in little folded tin foils. The had "flop houses" where ya just kinda pulled up a chair to sleep in if ya had nowhre to go, no where to live . what ever the owner didn't care if" ya flopped" on his couch ,just as long as ya smoked him up, shared your beer.
So the people at "The dead show" wre what I was used to see'in.
And be'in local< I aways was early. Had in my head to get there early so I would't get stuck wait'in. (wait'in for wait I had no clue had nowhere to be anyway) But ya could tell whe n traffic picked up and the local cops were sittin on the main rd com'in into town. usually with a umass cop , near by as well.Swore they knew what i was thinkin. So I would always keep 100 yrds between me 2 cops. Didn't know what "a rat" was back then. Noone snitched like now days. Usually by 10:eek:o a.m some car load of kids from out of state would let one of its passengers out to run up to me to see what "doses" I had. ( They must beable to see what I'm think'in ) out of the now crowded street, how did these kids now to run up to me? Everyone knew I had the better doses around. I knew the right people.
As soon as the second sheet was gone . and because every car now saw that everyone was running up to me for the stash. alot of hash around then also. easier to buy than a bag of pot. (The canadian hash root through nova scocia) I bought "blond hash for $70 an oz. I just had to buy 2 to get that deal. At $3- $5 a gram I made some nice spending money. It did not take long for me to have to keep changing my shirts to through cops off.
My own "dose " was now usaully startin to kick in. And I would swear
time had done some messed up deal. cause it was Dajo vo all over , like I had not moved from the year before. Even in the center of town you could hear the sound checks and what not goin on. Time to head to the stadium. There was a "head shop" right on main st. (can't beleive I can't remember its name). I always stopped to pick up a new "hash pipe" . Or see what new pictures were on the new smok'in stones( stone that ya put your joint in an noone could slobber your joint. By now you could smell pot all over.alot of people smoked "Rollies" your own rolled cigeretts. I always liked "drum". so you could walk along smokin your cigerettt off your "extended roach clip". Just couldn't pass it around.
I would buy a bottle of "rush" or "lockerroom " to have off hand
for that drum solo some band was do'in , and ya wanted that extra rush to make that moment, never forgottin. ( and ya know if I really thought, I could put myself in that moment) It would be gettin dark now. and ya could hear the bands would be start'in soon. sun was gett'in real low also. always went in stadium so I could get my bracelet for com'in and go'in. between the stadium and the park'in lot. with in an hour I would know where evryone was.
Time to redose myself also.now is the time to check out the younger
babes also. I always knew already who I would be with that nite. The " little hippie chicks" were and still are my favorite. Those cotton dreeses and long hair were just.... your all just so beutiful. a head band would always put one of them on your side . I always bought them a new one, so I could pic her out fast from aways away. I just put that head band on her. My mind is hav'in a hard time gettin past all the "hippie chicks" now.
There was always alot of local music. and walkin through the parkin area was now gettin good . The tailgates were now down< and everyone was go'in from group to group. I would whip out my new little hash pipe . We drank alot of "molson golden ale" then . so I would keep my eye out to open coolers with green bottles hang'in out. first one I would see, we would stop to see if they smoked as soon as they saw you break off a good peice of hash for the pipe . They would offer a "golden" . This is were I guess I got to know everyone. I liked hearing the talk betweeen them selves. That was a good way to see what type of people they were. "people watchin " I called it.
Met alot of really cool people "tail gatin" . I was usually the loud one.
Best way to get to know everyone and make yourself look like you were one of them. They would show you their stuff they had for sale. either pot ,hashor jewelary. I probally had one of the bigger necklace collectoins from shows I knew of. But I liked see'in what people had made them selves. At some point I would mentoin I could draw. And the pretty little hippie chick would start to talk now. And would bring out the sketch books. Some of the prettist cotton dressses I've ever seen were drawn on these sketch pads. Man , would I like to have m pad now!!! I always had my backpack with my sketch pad. This sketch pad told everyone what type of person you were talkin to. And they knew this also. I met some real nice girls at this point. This would be wher your statiss will be made for the weekend. Mine never changed much. "wildman" was my nic name since I was probally 13. I had a beard in the 7th grade, and not just fuzz.I could drink in most bars(drinkin age was 18 then)
Now the music was constint, time to head in. "The field" was were to be. Kinda in front of stage. Basically the spot we "matched" smokin bowl after bowl. The bowls and stories of the shows the group I was with just with are why I came to "the dead show" every augest.I can recall 4 yrs. in a row. If this augest they flipped in a show and jerry floated down for " one more"show. I know my soul would drift back to 1978. Kids now a days just don't have what my age group had. The world HAS changed to where it can not come back. Trust is gone. The cops have one "person" against the other.
Remember in the beginng of my story I would say it "was like they could read into me" this is were the rats come in. Back then, the cops , local state, federal whatever it maybe, knew as much as they do today. back then "nercs" were far and few. But the dealers were around longer. now, people are in and out so much. one person back then would know alot of people to take down. Now days everyone is talking. there is no respect for each other at all. I would not sell "pezz"I miss " the old dead days"

The other night i walked into a story at the most random hour Lol...Was walking around and had a group of dudes walk in after me and a few of them were my age the rest were older...There were like 5 or 6 all together...Coming from California for a greatful dead concert...One dude walks up to me, Justin, and asks do i want some pot Lol...I say nah man iam good because i had some in my pocket before and ive been on my safeside for too long Lol ...Iam just about to exit the store so i walk to the back to say peace and give him a handshake...We exhange words about some things he says "this is phenomenal" while i say "this is amazing", i start to head out, We each say God Bless you wile laughing enormoulsy...He was high as shit, i was sober Lol....I give him another hand shake and he gives me one of the greatest hugs ever Lol...The next day, afternoonish, iam walking to the bank or something and on the way iam stopped by a man in my neighborhood i know from where i used to work..he starts talking and talks for what seemed like eternity while i nod, but hes funny so i dont mind Lol....Out of nowhere Justin walks up on his way to the concert and gives me another Hug....Moral of story I should have went to the concert.
