i do not consider myself a hippie, but ive been label one. i dont smoke weed though, i do wear the look, just becuase thats what im confortable in. i do feel that i am a giid person, ive been told i am a good person. im not sure what the argument really is, live and let live.
If there wasn't such word as "hippie", I would've never found this site. Personally, I like the word. Yes, even though its over-used, over-rated, over-estimated and mostly used for lazy stoners, I like it I like people who are awesome (in a nutshell). Carefree, loving, passionate, ambitious, fun, people who want to make a difference, etc. This is how I define a 'Hippie'. So, the way I see it, I could've searched "carefree, loving, passionate..." in google, or I could search "hippie". I searched "hippie" and I was planted here. Is it a generalisation? Yes. Are most hippies hippies? Probably not. I agree with you, soul should come first. And I think the peace sign is being waaay produced OTT (it's everywhere!). But, I like the image. If anyone jumps down my throat cos of this post, you're not a hippie Free speech
I think there's nothing wrong with the word hippie, but with the way it's used sometimes and how a lot of 'hippies' whore around with it. It's losing it's meaning that way. But it still has it's use like LauryMay pointed out, I mean that's why generalisations are made  But I wish people would apply them to the group and not to make a caricature of themselves :cheers2:
Do you know what you are? You are what you is You is what you am, a cow don't make ham You ain't what you're not, so see what you got You are what you is and that's all it is A foolish young man from a middle class fam'ly Started singin' the blues, 'cause he thought it was manly Now he talks like the Kingfish ("Saffiiiee!") from Amos 'n Andy ("Holy mack'l dere, holy mack'l dere") He tells you that Chitlins , well, they taste just like candy He thinks that he's got the whole thing down From the Nivea Lotion to The Royal Crown Do you know what you are? You are what you is You is what you am, a cow don't make ham You ain't what you're not, so see what you got You are what you is and that's all it is A foolish young man of the Negro Persuasion Devoted his life to become a Caucasian He stopped eating pork, he stopped eating greens He traded his dashiki ("Uhuru!") for some Jordache Jeans He learned to play golf and he got a good score Now he says to himself, "I ain't no ****** no more" (Hey, hey, hey) (I want everybody together***) I don't understand you Who is who and what is what And why is this appropriot If you don't like , what you has got Drop it in the dirt and let it rot Someone else will surely come And pick it up 'cause he wants some And when one day you wonder who you used to was And what you do You'll scratch your head and look around But what you lost will not be found Do you know what you are? You are what you is You is what you am a cow don't make a ham You ain't what your not so see what you got You are what you is and that's all it is -Frank Zappa
You all make good points. Hippie is just a word, but I think I was criticizing the stereotype more than anything. Life is not about stereotypes or images, these things are irrelevant to what matters in the real world. But you are what you are, and if you try your best to make the word a better place I couldn't care less how you dress. I think many people have lost sight of that though and have made actions secondary to impressions. I find that unfortunate and I feel that it is one of the fundamental flaws of the human culture.
The stereotype sucks. I agree with that "When you leave this world, just try to leave it a little better off than when you entered it." My life goal. Lol. Some people see hippies as some sort of race. I just think leave us alone. Each to their own. ^ Accidental rhyme
I think the original definition of a hippie was someone who used LSD, dropped out, searched for truth and so on. I felt truly and humbly grateful, even blessed to be a hippie. Things changed & I changed my lifestyle and I wasn't a hippie anymore. But I was and still am, hip, and that's a good thing. Glad you searched for "hippie" - that's how I got here too.
Well sure that's not a bad thing. But I don't feel there's anything too them. They're just an image. Now as meaningless as a tye dye tee shirt.
Personally I don't really mind people who pose as hippies. Seriously, if someone has to hide behind such a blanket stereotype in order to feel like an individual its really not my problem. Its honestly only an arbitrary designation anyway.
Some of us aint posing as Hippies , theres some of us real ones still alive and breathing. Funny , once we were looked at as outcast's , but now we lived to actually see the time that people would want to be like us..........
the soul must come first.... I really like that one ninjarilla. even though I look like the most stereotype hippie I've ever met what can i say, people misconceptualize me all the time, but that would be the same if I looked different, I just stopped caring about the label quite some time ago
Don't kid yourself Hippies are still looked upon as naive freaks and silly outcasts in general and most of the small group of people that strive to be hippie does not want to be like anybody but to be a walking cliché.
You know , I never could figure out why people think of us as naive ? We know whats going on around us , but , we still hold onto that slim hope that maybe , with the help of a few people , the world can change and be well again. If thats naive , then , hell.....thats just sad.
Well, you know... you may not be naive but if I look at most hippies I see very different people. There is no 'we' for one uni-hippie. Although many of the stereotypes are actually true, they don't have to be present in every hippie. I see many naive hippies (also on this forum), and also many that know what's going on around us. Many activists but also many drugs taking couch potatoes (and party-people) that only talk but never do. And of course there are a couple of people who are in between all that. And you have the hippies on which none of those stereotypes seem true of course. Even though not nearly every hippie is naive, I can fully understand why people look upon hippies as such. That's what stereotypes do, and there's generally a partial truth in them.
True , I see those same people , so I can sure understand how that can reflect on all of us. I get a lot of people that come up to me and ask me if I know where to "find any weed ," even though I dont smoke it , just because of how I look. But , its nice to see theres folks like you that see all shades , and can tell them apart , instead of seeing just one color in the situation.
