^For some it's not "just hair".
Maybe try to grow a beard to look older.

This is seriously one of the stupidest posts I've ever read. Sure he could make a little bit of extra cash doing that stuff, but he will never make a living. I think you get paid like 50 cents for every one of those internet surveys. And down the road what is he going to put on a resume? "I couldnt get a job because I thought noone would like my hair, so I sat on my couch and did internet surveys all day". That attitude will never get you anywhere successful.

Pmeister: Man up and go get yourself a job. Only thing holding you back is how you see yourself and that will come across clearly in interviews with employers. At your age, employers expect teens to do all kinds of crazy shit with their hair and piercings and dreads are nothing new to them. Even if it's what you think is a shitty job, atleast it's experience and will show future and better employers that atleast you took the iniative to find and work a shitty job so you could move onto something better.
You could apply to a fuckin call center and make like 13 bucks an hour and they will hire anybody

But if your dreads are making you that depressed and you feel that they're holding you back, cut them off

kid obviously doesn't want dreads anymore. why talk him out of it?

yea i agree with everyone else, its a cop out to say you can't find a job with dreads.if i can find and keep jobs with my fucked up neglected set, you can do the same with your vanilla locks homey.

but its pretty obvious you just need an excuse to cut. so just do it already. find the true reason you want to cut and do it for that reason.

remember mandies story of trying to get a job at yewallowstone then finding out they had a no dreads policy, so she chopped off her dreads and ..still never got the job?
and now shes working in i believe child psychology
typicaly a rarther conservative field and her dreadies look wilder then ever (loveably so)
u can bla,e the dreads all u want but that doesnt mean the dreads make much difgference
why dont ya blame the government and global stupidity?
    isnt that truly to blame?

Word. With the proper education and credentials, hair wouldn't hold anyone back

    Exactly

Blaming the government or anything else is just as cheap as blaiming hair imo

    Jesus, this thread took off!
I'm not looking for a cop out, or an excuse to cut my dreads.
Everyone just went off on a holy war to try and discover my reasons that I already explained!

I don't want to cut my dreads off, I just get so pissed off with peoples attitudes sometimes.
I was going for jobs in Electronics shops, I have a history in building up PC's.
Also tried some clothes shops that sell sort of shabby surf stuff.
I tried outback jobs and shop floor, I could tell from the way they looked at my dreads and everything they didn't want me from the word go.

No complex's here about my dreads & employment, don't know where that came from! :p

I get frustrated sometimes, I'm not cutting them, but I like how the thread went onto a he should cut/shouldn't cut debate :p

    @Dragon
Cheers :D for the comments, great to be back!
Thanks everyone for your guidance etc.

i havent read all the posts in this thread so if someone has said something similar oh well

but of course when you go in for an interview make sure to be well dressed...at least a nice pair of jeans and a collared shirt, if not slacks and a button down shirt...you can tailor it (lol pun) depending on the job, how formal it is, but you always want to look presentable...

at some point in the interview ask them if they are an equal rights and opportunity employer...if you have your dreads for spiritual reasons then that is NOT an acceptable reason for them to deny you employment...explain that you understand some of the stereotypes attached with dreads, but you have your dreads for your own reasons...i know one company i had applied to a while back (The Cracker Barrel...it's a very family oriented good ol home style country cookin restaurant) would not normally have hired me w/o getting a hair cut, however i explained why i was unwilling to cut my hair (locks of love donation) and they were more than willing to bypass the rule for that reason...

to expand on the "equal rights and opportunity" argument...you can explain to them that certain religions require dreadlocks as part of their faith or whatever (anyone critiquing my comments don't get too caught up on details here...i dont know everything about any religion, haha) anyways, you can explain it saying "though i am not a follower of these religions, i have my dreadlocks for many of the same reasons, and it is something very spiritual for me, I dont feel that just because i am not attached to a certain organization or religion that i should have any less rights than those that are"

(i dont know your reasons for having dreads, or your religious affiliation, these are just thoughts goin through my head)

as long as you explain your hair situation in an intelligible way and convey to them the importance of your dreads to you they should see that you are not the stereotypical dreadlocked slacker that many employers may expect...

as of now i have long hair, not dreaded yet of course...any interviews i go to though i will be sure to let them know my plans to dread my hair, the process it will go through, and my reasons for doing it...hopefully it will go well
    :cheers2: good luck

I had this job but instead of the couch i had my own office.

I was a video transcoding specialist for an online tv company, my job was to log and transcode all the video we got in then rewatch it to make sure the quality was still the same and the audio and video synced up.

    easiest money i ever made

Hang in there mate, You just gotta stay positive... I've been job searching for 4 months and no luck but u don't see me cutting my dreads over it. And yeah, all the knock backs are due to my dreads... But its not the point, you gotta find the right job for you, you cant go changing your self for the job or you'll end up leaving anyway. Then what will you have? No job and no dreads.

    Stay positive, peace.

    (this is all pre-dreads)
I thought I'd just add my own little story
I currently and have been working my job for nearly 2 years. When we were at the induction we were all told "no piercings besides ears and no crazy hair" At the time I just had short hair. about 8 months ago I started the natural route for my dreads and my hair has been pretty messed up since. I've also got my tounge pierce, had my nose pierced and will be getting my lower labret done sooner or later.

My manager has told me that she doesn't mind aslong as I continue to work hard. My work performance out shines the mess I am wearing and the metal that stuck out from my face.

Moral of the story, Have faith. When you are at job interviews sell your self (in the right way)
If in the end you do cut its not the end. You can just follow the same journey as I did

Whether or not this has any value. I just thought I'd put it out there

    toodles noodles

well i got 3 jobs last year with dreads ,I dont wanna rub it in or anything.

Besides my jobs are small I do cleaning at a school in the mornings, work at the community centre cooking for a lunch club once a week.
And once a week I run a cafe over there too.
I guess cleaning.....it does not really matter what you look like its just well...cleaning.
And working over the community centre well thats a 'community centre' they cant really discriminate against ppl.
I've never tried to get a job with dreads doing something 'more important' like 'higher paid' etc ....
I never really thought it would matter, its only hair it just looks a little different????
Besides i only needed a few hours a week as I make the rest of my money from my 'crochet' just needed a little extra to be comfortable.
Im so glad I made my little shop otherwuse I might of been in the same situation :(
