Time is FLYING when you have dreads, eh? I can't believe mine are almost 3 months, I'm totally aware that they're babies but a fuckin 4th of a year has passed already, I can't wait to see them in 9 months!

lol yeah, sorry I was just paging through this again.

at my commencements when it got to the H's there was a Katie in front of me, me, and a Kate right after lol and in every class I've ever had there was at least 1 other kate, and we'd all have to be Kate H or Katie P or whatever, it sucked. When I have kids, I hope they'll be the only ones with their names!

I started with backcombing, a friend of my roommate came over and did them over two days, but she was really impatient and fucked with the sectioning, hence the fatty dreads and the skinny ones. Not that I mind, I love everything about them!

I was waxing them every few days after washing and drying every 2 to 3 days but I noticed that they weren't really locking up with the wax on them and they came apart so much in the shower, so now I just wash once a week and never ever wax. When they're dry I fingerweb each one for like 10-20 minutes each depending on how much they need it and then let them do their thing until the next wash lol.

Has anyone else found palmrolling and clockwise rubbing to be selfdestructive to their dreads? Mine fall apart like crazy after palmrolling, it totally destroys all the fat knots that are coming in, and the rubbing seems to take me forever to have anything happen with them? My roots are like two inches long and eventually I'll have to do something to lock them up I'm sure...

yeah, my sections are all fucked up too, but i love em!

so, do you plan on removing the wax?

what's finger webbing? is that what some people call "dread balling"? where you just rub the hair into a knot/ball and tuck it into your lock?

Personally, I only palmroll bout twice a month to make sure i don't have any flatties. The clockwise rubbing i stopped doing b/c it seems to make you lose length by sucking the hair that's in the center of your lock towards the scalp. The one thing I can tell you about clockwise rubbing is STOP rubbing as soon as you feel a mass forming under your palm/fingers, or you will rub it straight again. lol. Besides, I'm sure everyone on here will tell you not to palmroll or rub. It's really up to you. Do it on a few to see how they turn out, if you must.

palmrolling and rubbing does help, if thats the look you are going for. absolutely nothing wrong in doing it. i used to do it a lot earlyer, and like it back then. but quit because im lazy, and because i more and more like them to do their own thing, and dont want to control anything

From what I've seen and felt, there isn't really any wax left in them. I make sure I shower with like ultra hot water all the time and I'm really quite rough with them when I'm washing. I do plan on doing a very hot water rinse, maybe even a natural lemon juice rinse or other nice smelling rinses I've seen on here, but not for a few months, hopefully anything left in them with come out with that.

Fingerwebbing is when you hold the dread between your index and middle finger and push in onto the top of those fingers in a circular motion, it totally starts a wicked knot and really doesn't take that long. If my dreads look flat, I'll work that on them and they round out in seconds, it's awesome. I think that's why so many in the back are ultra fat and short, it kind of makes the hair suck into where ever you happen to be working on the dread. I work from the root to the tip, and they shrink every single time I do it, no lie.

I'm not really worried about losing length, from the timelines I've seen on here everyone has shrinkage (insert innuendo here lol) and their dreads either lengthen out around a year or just grow as the hair grows. Besides, I'd only take them out after like five or six years and probably just to try another size for them all or another method, so by then my hair would be miles long lol

Yeah I'm really not super into the maintenance, I like that I had control over the sections and that I do help them out once a week but beyond that they will do their thing. I was really over working them in the beginning and the rolling and rubbing just made them fall out, for me, personally anyways. I just wanted to know if I was crazy or not because palmrolling and rubbing is like worshipped on most of the industrial websites anyways

supposedly, now i don't know because i'm only 4 months in myself, it is completely normal to have 1-2 inches of straight hair at your roots. It will lock on its own. If you are impatient, you can clockwise rub, but it has its disadvantages as i mentioned above. Also, when you rub, your locks will stick out for a day or so.

By the way, I'm super excited for you. We're at about the same place in our journeys!
