And here I was thinking he couldn't become any more divorced from reality.

I somehow don't see our youth buying into this.

    Nice one Gordo.

Hmm, I thought we abolished slavery in 1835?

Yet another wheeze for bringing unemployment numbers down and excluding ppl from the benefits system...

To be integrated into the already compulsory education system ... actually sounds like a good idea to me? Young people will be learning new skills while contributing a few days work to their communities... what exactly is wrong with this?

has anyone asked the charities if they want to be co-opted into the education system? Having a bunch of surly teenagers dumped on them may not exactly be the answer to their prayers.

I remember another group of kids in a sort of compulsory youth service. HITLER YOUTH.

hate the idea............... Obama wants to do something like this too, damn, let people be free to make their own choices........

"The Prime Minister said a pledge to introduce compulsory community service would be included in Labour’s next general election manifesto. "

    no need to worry then..

I think a good compromise may be for the kids to have a wide choice of charities they want to work for, and for it to just be a one off thing for a couple of weeks. Afterall, they have compulsory "work experience", and this will arguably be even better for them and for everyone than that

I dont like the idea of people being forced to work for charity...we should choose which causes we want to support. Kids could be forced into supporting something they dont agree with. But giving them an extensive choice should solve this, or including community service, picking up litter etc, which is inarguably a great thing. Giving them the choice also teaches that deciding to work for charity can be really rewarding

I think it should be incorporated as part of a wider education about respect for others and the environment. It risks being presented to them in the wrong way, like "you must do this dirty work from now on" which would just turn them off being helpful in future

Overall its not such a bad plan aslong as its done in the right way with enough respect for the kids wishes and education, and of course for the charities involved
