Moved here from Canada. Any ideas on places to go, things to see, activities to do? Any other members living here?
Good luck, Nottingham itself is not so bad, if a bit rough. They have nice outdoor plays at the castle in summer if thats your kind of thing. Unfortunately theres only a little bit of Sherwood forest left, but still worth a visit. I dont live there but have family in Mansfield nearby (do not go there! Very nasty place) so Im up quite often Be prepared for the crazy accents and dialects and everyone knowing eachother, and avoid the underground passages, partly because they stink of pee
Haha, everyone says it's so rough! I've only been out a few times (Canadian money doesn't go very far and even a return bus trip to the city centre is $6). I went on the new "Wheel" which was pretty cool. We're going to Matlock (my boyfriend and I) this weekend to do a bit of exploring. I'd like to see the Peak District as well - maybe rent a bicycle. God I've been so lazy since I got here. I'm iching to meet some new people and to have a bit of fun!
No Nottinghams the safe haven of Nottinghamshire, believe me! Sure you may get threatened with a knife and step in a few strong smelling puddles, but thats a welcome break from whats going on in the nearby areas
And Identity-Matlocks not bad Visiting the surrounding countryside is a good idea, it tends to be quiet too as most of the Notts residents dont seem to bother with it
I visited Nottingham last week, check out The Alley Cafe Bar. It's really cool, hidden down an alleyway in the city centre. A vegetarian/vegan cafe. Amazing place, very bohemian and intimate. http://www.alleycafe.co.uk/ If you need directions or anything, lemme know and I'll try my best, despite the fact I live in Kent. xD
I lived in Nottingham from 1988 to 1994, there was a great local music scene (I was part of it) and some excellent people. Hardly anyone I knew during my time there was actually *from* Nottingham, due to it being a big Student City. The Forest Fields area is the place for hippies (that's where I lived, in several different houses). St Anns is the dodgy rough area. I don't know the current local scene, except that two of the old local bands are still going (Idiot Joy & Wholesome Fish - both excellent)
Hah, indeed.. walk around in Ilkeston at night and if you haven't been stabbed within five minutes I'll give you a tenner Really the only good place to go in nottingham is out of nottingham.
Nottingham is really not that bad. I mean I've not even been looked at the wrong way. I'm going to go to Ilkeston to see the house my grandmother used to live in, as well as Ollerton. My boyfriend said I can't go to Ilkeston until I have a car because it's rough. HAHA. I don't know, I've known people who stayed in Ilkeston and actually walked to Nottingham and never ran into any problems. My neighbourhood is alright (Beeston). Honestly I think the media has a bigger hand in crime than criminals. I'm always reading about stabbings and muggings, but I also think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. People get scared of being stabbed, so they carry knives. Doesn't take a genius to figure out what happens next. I, for one, am not going to fear Nottingham. When I see overly fear-mongering articles published, I complain.haha. Gedder done!
There are a couple of good pubs near the river (sorry forgot their names). You ought to pay your respects at the statue of Brian Clough, who with Peter Taylor put Nottingham on the map, when they led Forest to two consecutive European cups.
Just had to say we went to this place last weekend and the food was just :drool5::drool5: The cakes were awesome:cheers2:
