I've read 4 or 5 threads in this forum about people my age and younger about how they wish it was the past....I find it kinda scary. The world we live in today is really, really fucked, even moreso if we don't do anything. The government that rules us (and pretty much the rest of the world too), the environment, rock and roll, etc etc..... but it is us who can make a change! If you really want things to be like they were in the past, well too damn bad, its not going to happen....but it is us who can change the world for the better NOW! If you really want things to be all peaceful like you think they were in the 60s and 70s (tho they werent even peaceful then), well it is only us who can do something about it. Stop whining for the past and make a change in our world NOW! If not, well we can just kiss this planet goodbye; if Nature doesn't fuck us over, we will all be slaves to corporate greed.
But then again, this is flashback forum America is stuck in a rut. There was a time when people would work hard and do creative things in music, TV, politics, etc. Crazes would last two or three years, people would enjoy them, and then move on with new ventures. Things haven't changed all that much with music and TV for the past 20 years. It's really strange. Our parents didn't copy the past. They worked hard and created a new world. People in the 60s and 70s were dedicated, whether it was music or social movements. Things today are very different. Almost everyone is trying to make the most money off the least work. I would love to hear a new type of music, as opposed to the same old cookie cutter beat that's been popular the past 20 years (I won't mention it by name, as people get very upset). I suggest people work hard and create something new. Use the past as a model for new ventures but try not to get immersed in it all the time. People in the 70s did hark back to the 50s for a few years, but they also kept creating new movements. If one spends too much time on the past, the future passes us by.
People! C'mon, our revolution is here, we just don't know it because its underground. This is because of the damn bloody media and the greedy corporations that own it. We'll never hear any bad things about the corps because people would rather get paid for making them look good then do the right thing for peanuts. Thankfully there are some righteous people out there doing all they can to stop this and promote balance on this earth (in every respect). Things are so majorly out of wack today but most of us don't see because its all hidden so well (thank you censorship). And about music, we've got tons of new indie music, its just a matter of looking hard enough for it. In the sixties and seventies the popular music was great because the record labels weren't run by money hungry pigs. We'll never have "real" music again in the pop/rock industry because nowadays everything is about mass consumption. I think the answer to our messed up world is to stop taking more than we need. What do you guys think?
Ani Difranco is the best new music I've heard in a longggggggg time.... she's independent And, yes, I believe it's true... there's always a revolution going at any given time. You've just got to find it or make a sub-revolution.
Ani Difranco? lol, okay, your thing. Like I said in the "I Wish it was the Seventies" thread, there's a bit of a retro-revival scene going on now, and has been since about 1999, but not enough people are into it to fuel it. You can't bring back something if the masses of your generation have had lobotomies and simply don't want to change anything. You can play as much rock, as loud as you want, but if you can't grab hold of the masses again, you're not going to change a thing. I agree with the other guy, no one wants to change a thing. Television has been the same thing for 15 years man. Look at Saturday Night Live. In the 70s it was incredible, now it's garbage. Like I said, again, in the other post,... MORE DRUGS! One can argue that drugs don't make a person or a collective on a whole more creative, but one, two and three will all be completely wrong. Drugs can have terrible side-effects, but no one can argue that they don't make you more creative (and who wants to live forever?). They put you in a different reality and on a different mortal coil entirely, which is condusive to creative arts, but not necessarily to health. I don't need a neurologist here to try to prove that. Give a rap fan one good trip and rap will be ruined for him forever. I know it's true, because I've been the preacher converting before. He'll feel the need to make something deeper, he will no longer be able to take rap at face value. He'll try to look into it for a deeper meaning and he won't be able to find one. I'm not saying that we should drug all the kids to get them to see our vision,... or am I?
i think soulrebel has an excellent point, if our generation doesn't act soon we, and the future generations with become even more fucked up than we already are. On the other hand, I think the discussions in the flashback forum are either just for memories sake, or are the youth of today wishing for the seemingly carefree times of the yesteryears. I don't think we can disregard the past either, from what else will we learn? I think there needs to be a healthy balance between reflection and planning for the future, don't dwell too much, but just enough to appreciate the good times, see the mistakes that were made, learn from them and move into a (hopefully) better, brighter future. I look forward to our revolution...
I don't know if the issues of today can be solved by drugs. Certainly, music can be made a lot more interesting with the help of some influences but what about economical imbalance and environmental issues. What about the media? I don't think drugs are going to help that. Our generation is so pleasure oriented and consumer oriented. I don't think drugs are bad, but I don't think they're going to defuck the world either.
Lookit guys... There Is nothing new under the Sun. We got the idea for paper from paper wasps. We got the idea for alcohol from fermenting fruit. We get all our ideas from someone else... but mostly from nature. But the one phrase that sticks in my mind is: "Plagiarize, plagiarize... let no one's work evade your eyes." Another phrase I find noteworthy is; Take what you need and leave the rest." We are innovative in our ideas because we take from other's ideas. Take what you need from what you understand of our revolution in the past societal melee... leave the rest if'n you don't need it. We are All Revolting here.... absolutely Revolting. Sam
There's a difference between innovation and invention. Beyond that, I never said that drugs were going to save our planet, that's not really my biggest concern, my being a half-assed hippie and all. My biggest concern is seeing some creative people come along again, and natural creativity will never compare to that of someone on acid. You want to change the world, become a political tool-box, that's the least of my interests in life!
come on people now...smile on me brother...everybody lets get together...try to love one another right now
Zoso Zeppellin is right... when u talk about a balance between the past and the future ... We had to live in present questions... How's the state of the world? Economic value are growin wildly like bad seeds those are our days... The state of the world had change.... I compare why an evolution or revolution is even more difficult now than 35 years ago... 1- There's no more bipolar world with this hope of the 69' young people of maybe a right communist cause (communist maybe live in communion!) the brutal death of Che Guevarra (35 years ago some says it was yankee spy who killed the right cause that he reprezent) 2- the John F. Kennedy assasination (he was the first young president to reprezent the young generation) he wanted to help black cause and was a little too gentle with communist...was the opinion of the majority of southern yankees and a lot of old bastard in the country...this is the first crack between the old generation and the young (in 63 it was much more the beatniks than the hippies who arrive in 65 principaly) 3-Bob Kennedy death in 68 was a destroy a lot of hope of peace in a near future in the same time the pacifist Luther King was killed too 68 was the year of lost peace ...the rainbow-colored-hippie moovement find is shadow this damn year (with the sensibility that give psychedelic drugs it don't help)...68 too was a real progression of heroin abuse...(in this time you don't find all this information 'bout drugs...so you can understand all those lost thousand people who loose their body into the poison) The heroin is often now told as the cause of the demise of the High -Hashbury scene with pills of speed of bad quality... From 65 until the end of 67 all the stuff of San Francisco was generally good (so the moovement was ridin' high) but from the autumn 67 the governement of californy give a total war too psychedelic dealers ...a lot of arrest... so gently the government kill the gentle dealers who give too High-hashbury hippies all the good stuff of high quality are in prison ...it give more and more place to other kind of hard drugs and other dealers who built fast drugs that can make you even more bad trips...so the situation change of the hippie revolution change in a few month ... With the other political sad events of 68 all was goin' wrong...and like San Francisco was the capital of hippie culture ...you know when a heart is becomin' sick ...all the moovement will be sick... the government of california is the main reponsable of the end of a dream... I will expose u other reason of the demise of hippie culture tomorrow... sorry 4 my average english marc
You have to admit if everyone on Earth got stoned at the same time you'd have world peace (till it wore off).:H
Let's get stoned...this could be the solution for sure...but you've got to become a new sort of terrorist to do this... We've got to put LSD in the communal water of every town of the world and maybe the world will change more...dramatically...or dreamy...!? This is the question brothers & sisters !
Be better if you could put LSD in the water of a meeting of the world leaders like WTO or G8.:sunglasse
