Hello everybody! I just graduated college in December, and I'd really like to go overseas to teach English as a foreign language. I'm also considering joining the Peace Corps. I am beginning the application process for the PC and their policy on drugs is as follows: "A Volunteer or Trainee (V/T) found to be involved with drugs in a manner not authorized for medical purposes, in any way in any country, will be administratively separated immediately. The Peace Corps enforces this strict policy because the cultivation, manufacture, traffic, and use of drugs, including marijuana, is illegal in most countries. Additionally, drug involvement by Volunteers and Trainees in any country could seriously jeopardize the entire Peace Corps program, as well as the safety and health of Volunteers and Trainees. Applicants with any drug-related arrest or conviction in their legal history will not have their application considered for Peace Corps service until one year has passed from the date of the arrest or conviction, whichever is later." I am a regular marijuana smoker, and 2-3 times a year I experience LSD or mushrooms. I am 100% committed to abstaining from illegal drugs while a member of the Peace Corps, but I'm wondering how honest I should be about my current habit. I would hate for my application to be immediately discarded simply because I'm honest about my marijuana use in an interview. Does anyone have any experience applying for and/or joining the Peace Corps as a user of unfortunately illegal substances? If I'm asked in an interview if I use illegal drugs, should I say I use marijuana but that I am fully prepared to quit if I am to serve in the Peace Corps? Or should I just keep my trap shut? I'm worried about dishonesty because of the following: "If you fail to disclose any required information regarding legal, financial or drug and alcohol behavior, the Peace Corps may revoke your invitation to serve, or disqualify you from Peace Corps service. Any misleading, inaccurate, or incomplete information may be cause for disqualification or termination. In addition, any intentionally false statement may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment pursuant to 18 U.S.C. Section 1001." Also, I'm just naturally an honest person Note: I have had absolutely no trouble with law enforcement aside from the occassional speeding and parking tickets. My record is clean.
