I was reading about SSRI's and the mechanism of there action, they inhibit serotonin reuptake.

Well amphetamines function by reinhibiting serotonin and dopamine reuptake with some other things.

This made me wonder, how similar is the effect of SSRI's to amphetamine? Because there described mechanism of action seems similar.

I've never had a SSRI and my experience with amphetamines is incredibly limited. So I couldn't compare and contrast, but to those that have had both, are SSRI's at all similiar to amphetamines in anyway? Are SSRI's euphoric or speedy?

not similar even a little bit.

except some people have trouble with sex drive while taking ssris, and many guys also have a hell of a time maintaining an erection while taking amphetamines.

Why are you trying to compare these two completely different classes of drugs? You cannot get high off of ssri's (depression meds), don't even try.

i've been prescribed an SSRI and had trouble sleeping. then on the fourth night i woke up around 2am and felt like what i imagine a coke or meth overdose would feel like.. insanely fast / hard thumping heart, sweating, muscle cramping, eyes poppin outta my skull... felt like when i used to do meth too much. (hadn't been using uppers for over a year at the time)..
even pharmaceutical companies admit that they don't fully understand how antidepressants work or how exactly they affect the brain... so who knows, maybe they do have something in common...
oh, and as far as my reaction to SSRI's, i came to the conclusion that they just give me really bad panic attacks. but it really did feel similar to doing too many uppers.

I would have thought you had researched this sort of thing years ago, rygoody...

at any rate, the similarity between ssri's and MDMA (not other amphetamines) is that they both act on the serotonin receptors in the brain.
