The most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. Whiskey's alright, rum not so bad, I ran out of vodka a few hours ago and luckily found a bottle of tequila... oh my god that shit is HORRIBLE. It's a pleasant enough drunk though.

    what kind of tequila?

good tequila is amazing, lousy tequila sucks. either way, it's an acquired taste.

I think it's good, I dunno, I'm a whiskey drinker, I never drink tequila. It's some kind of Jose Cuervo, it's clear.

cuervo isn't bad, but its not a very good tequila. it's my standby, but there are far, far better tequilas out there

Yeah don't get me wrong the buzz is fantastic, it's the taste that's atrocious. Lol. I've been drunk every night for 8 days straight (at least)... do you think getting wasted is a lost cause at this point? The whole night I've had half a bottle of vodka (the smaller one) I have one shot of tequila left out of half the (small) bottle and two glasses of wine... sure it was over several hours but I feel completely sober. I'm confused.

i spent a year or two getting drunk every night. and i mean proper drunk. these days i still have a drink every night before bed, but its much less most of the time.after 8 days is getting drunk every night a lost cause? no, but its not healthy, and could potentially develop into a bad habit if you let it get away from you.

but if you dont like the taste of plain tequila, which i understand but no longer relate with, i recommend putting it in some orange juice with a spoonful of grenadine on the bottom, make yourself a tequila sunrise. you'll see the light.

Oooh sounds good. I'll have to try that sometime. I'm not really one for mixed drinks, I do shots or drink from the bottle, but sounds pretty tasty.

yeah, but sometimes cocktails are the path to enjoying a new type of liquor.

i definitely recommend splurging and trying cabo wabo resposado sometime if you have the money for it. its excellent beyond belief. beats the fucking hell out of patron or 1800

cuervo gold is pretty decent for affordable tequila. its sweet, mellow, and smooth, but definitely nothing special. still, it's my standby. cuervo tradicional is slightly better, but not by a lot.

seriously though, cabo wabo is where it's at:

i haven't tried a hell of a lot of tequilas, but this is definitely the best i know. love it, but its pricey. depending on location, $40-60

Whatever tequila you go with, make sure the label says 100% agave. Otherwise, you have no fuckin' idea what they put in there to stretch it. After all, it comes from Mexico. I'm a big 1800 fan, but that's just one of the many pure agave tequilas. Also, anything of a golden color (barrel-aged + caramel) is going to be smoother for a beginner than a clear tequila (aged in stainless steel).

The tequila sunrise is a great mixed drink to start with, but you may soon advance to just tequila and OJ, which is lower in sugar and calories. Tequila and sour mix (a.k.a. tequila sour) is one of my favorites, but it is only one ingredient (splash of lime) away from the original margarita, a much more sophisticated drink than the fruity, high-calorie shit that most restaurants and tourist bars serve.

Nesta, I know what you are thinking. I left out Sauza Hornitos and its straw-colored competitors, aged in oak but without caramel. I just thought that small group of tequilas was not mainstream enough to bother a tequila novice about.

Tequila is pretty nice as spirits go. Don't usually like anything neat, but I can handle that and Southern Comfort. Never heard of Cuervo Gold though, I take it it's an American drink...

Sold in America. All of our tequila comes from Mexico. The blue agave plant does not grow here.

nope. its pretty much a standard run of the mill tequila.

not actually called cuervo gold, though, its just how many people refer to it. it is jose cuervo especial

i wasn't thinking that at all. i haven't tried many tequilas (cabo wabo, 1800, patron, regular old sauza, that margaritaville stuff which wasn't very good, cazadores, a couple of cuervo tequilas) and won't claim to know it. i just know out of what i've tried, what i like the best. and its definitely cabo wabo and cazadores. cuervo is good on a tighter budget.

Ohh, that stuff, yeah I have had that many a time... Urgh!

It's decent, as long as you avoid the clear one. Golden is always the way to go I reckon.

...gold, as to distinguish it from Cuervo Especial Silver, which is the clear version of the same product. As a bartender, unless somebody requested a silver tequila, the only thing I ever used it for was Long Island Iced Tea. At home, I use gold tequila for that too.

I have seen guys almost come to blows debating Sauza (premium stuff) vs. 1800 at a bar. I stayed out of that. Sauza never did impress me, except for Conmemorativo, but everybody is entitled to their own personal taste.

Margaritaville? It's not even 100% agave. That means, by Mexican law, it can be up to 49% something else, and they don't even have to tell you what it is. Probably, it's low-grade grain alcohol and Mexican creek water. That shit will give you a quick headache and a nasty hangover if you drink much of it.

BTW, Chilli's is so proud of their so-called secret recipe for their Presidente margarita. The recipe is printed on the back of every bottle of Presidente Brandy sold in the US.
