I don't blame him one bit. How fucking ignorant. I was pissed, they got the president of the united states and they've got to fucking speak French to appease the 20% of the french asshole population, most of which who understand English anyway. What utter bullshit! What kind of country's ancestors win a war and decide to give the loosing minority control of the government? That's basically what they did when they went bilingual. To hold a government position you need to be bilingual and basically the only people who actually speak both languages are the french minority so guess who's in charge.

Why was the plains of abraham reenactment cancelled? To appease the separatists. If Harper didn't speak French, then I'm sure they'd be all over him.
Either way, we still are officially a bilingual country so it doesn't bother me all that much even though I don't speak any french what so ever.

It makes sense to the french people but not to the president, they should just tell them what he already said but in french. :D

The official bilingualism was 1 of 2 major factors that I chose not to enlist in the military when I finished high school. It wasn't the fact that I would have to become fluent in french, it was that only the English officers were required to be bilingual at the time. French officers were only required to know french at the time. Had french officers been required to bilingual at the time, the language issue would have been a moot point in my eyes and I would only have to think over the second issue a lot closer than I did.

NCO's only had to know either official language but I would never enlist as anything other than a commissioned officer.

BTW I know my rant has to do anything with O's visit, just the bullshit of our official bilingualism.

i was in the military in the 70s .....all french soldiers were forced to become biligual and only officers had to be proficient in bothfrench and english .and if you were french speaking you were looked down upon ..seen more racists in the federal service than anywheres else in canada .been told to speak white and to go back to my lily pond more than once ...but i have a thick hide ..didn't bother me any if some were ignorant to other languages and cultures

I'm sorry, is it the fault of French Canadians that your average anglo canadian is to ignorant to bother picking up a second language? And here's a news flash for ya; our ancestors faught on BOTH sides of the war!(at least mine did) Folks like you REALLY get under my skin with your sense of entitlement and skewed vision of history. You scream bloody murder because there are actually people in this country which speak a different language and have the audacity to demand thier linguistic heritage be respected by the governement and a country WHICH THEY HELPED TO CREATE. You might aswell just paint a big fucking sign that says assimilation and stomp around yelling "HOMOGENY, HOMOGENY"

Ironically, it was the lack of bilingualism in the military that started the FLQ.

I think that the French language is an important part of Canada and Canadian culture. Although I do not believe that the French-Canadian culture is any far cry different than the Anglo-Canadian culture. However, because not every Canadian citizen is fluent or knowlegable in both French and English (and in many cases, either) it is important for Canadian politicians to post their questions & comments in both languages.
