I think when you say 'mind' you mean only the rational mind, the discursive intellect. I agree entirely that thinking cannot get you to the goal. However, what I said in my previous post was that intuition is a power of mind above the rational. Intuitive mind sees directly. It sees completely. This is really the same thing as is meant by buddhi in the Bhagavad Gita. In the Gita the term 'manas' is used to denote the mental plane. There is lower and higher manas, lower and higher mind, and above them, buddhi, a higher power of knowledge on one hand, and the knowledge itself on the other.
For individuals, consciousness is an inverted pyramid. They are on the bottom point, and it all expands outwards from that point of individuality. "Enlightenment", is the ability to move up and down this pyramid, while still keeping your foot in the door at the bottom of the pyramid. Your human self. It's not unlike looking out of a cave at the world beyond. Safe in the cave of belief, few get curious enough to ever leave. Those who return...as the old saying goes, "you can never go home again". Their attraction to this world is now in decline. They can never be at home here again. It's because of their conviction, that others follow, also curious of what lays beyond that could affect a person so. They've seen "God", and can no longer function as pre-programmed John Doe's. These people, the ripe apples of humanity, are fixing to drop away. The tree no longer matters to them. The tree, society, won't understand. x
Hare Krishna ! From BBB..... "It's actually possible that there is a parallel or link between Indian teachings on Kundalini and some beliefs of the old Gnostic schools of early Christianity. Generally in the west, the serpent has been regarded as a symbol of evil, because of the role of the serpent in the book of Genesis in tempting Eve. However, some gnostics believed that the serpent is a symbol of knowledge, and identified the God of genesis as an evil entity, the demiurge, who sought to keep man enslved by ignorance and the serpent in the garden as Christ, who came to give Adam and Eve true knowledge or gnosis (it was the fruit of the tree of knowledge they ate)." Dear BBB, I do not know much about the issue but snakes are not thought to be evil. It is dangerous of course and I keep miles away from the Serpent families. Just a few minutes back I was watching Cobras on TV on Animal Planet and now I am seeing and feeling snakes everywhere around me. However, there is a wonderful connection between snakes and meditation (Awaken Kundalini) and Samadhi. It has been a frequent experience of great yogis to have snakes around them when they go into deep meditation.Whenever a yogi goes into deep meditation and samadhi (Kundalini shakti moving up) snakes, if any near by, would come and stand still in front of him. It does not do any harm, it simply goes away when meditation breaks and the yogi comes back to the material world.(Kundalini shakti coming down). This has been experienced by almost all yogis. This happened to Swami Vivekananda even at the age of 8/10 when he was meditating outside his house and lost all material senses. The reason for this is very interesting. What I have gathered from books and some sadhus is wonderful. It is said, when kundalini shakti starts going up during deep meditation it creates an inaudible sound caused by sub-sonic vibration, which is created by the Shakti movement. We cannot hear that sound. Snakes, as you know, cannot hear anything but they have super-sensitive mechanism to feel even sub-sonic vibration. So, snakes feel this vibration, they love it and get charmed. As the meditation ends and the vibration stops, snakes go away. Isn't it very interesting ? But because of this knowledge, I always prefer to meditate inside four walls only and never outside ! Love, Kumar.
It is interesting. Around here, there are a few adders up on the hills, whose bite is rarely fatal, and actually, it's very difficult to catch sight of one, as they are shy and retiring - Myself I don't think any animal is bad - however, the medieval Christians certainly did, and thought snakes, toads, newts, bats, some insects and even my beloved cats were creatures of satan...Thank God we live in more enlightened times, at least in some small respects! The Native American tribe of Hopis also have snake traditions. Their tribe is divided into several clans, all named after various animals. Members of certain clans have their definite specified roles in the quite elaborate Hopi rituals. Members of the snake clan have an annual dance where they handle venomous rattle snakes, and it is said they never get bitten, because the snake is a close relative of theirs. They say if someone not of the snake clan tried it, they'd get a fatal bite. I wonder if in some way that could be connected to this sensitivity to vibration snakes have? There are also some Baptists in the US who handle rattlers in church, but I've heard that a few of them have got bitten before now. They say that the power of the Holy Spirit keeps them from getting bitten. I'm sure there is much interesting lore surrounding snakes from around the world.
