    Hey guys...

Here is something I've been kicking around... not sure why I want to do it... but it just feels like something I need to look into...

I have a 3 year old Lab.. and lately I've noticed she has been getting good at tracking things (i.e. toss things into the woods, and she finds it).

Now, what is the first thing a rational stoner thinks.. - "I gotta train her to sniff out weed". Yup, I need my own drug sniffing dog... Not sure why, but I bet there are a few practical applications I could use that skill for.

Anyhow, anyone ever heard of an ordinary person training a dog to do that? Any ideas on how it could be done?

    Thanks
    Soc

your dog is too old to be trained like that.

the drug dogs police use etc. are trained very early in very simple ways, tennis balls and toys are filled/scented with the drug smell, they are then taught to seek out/find their toys which have the smell

so when they are looking for drugs they simply give them the command to find the toy/smell and they go lookign for it

3 is pretty old for any kind of training though, especially somthing like this

I am going to have disagree, dogs are quite smart. With enough patience and perseverance you should be able to teach your dog the basics of sniffing out marijuana or any other object carrying a odor.

i agree 100%. dogs can be taught things when they are older, and 3 years old is not an old dog. i've taught my dog (4 years old now) several new tricks in the last year. the key is being able to communicate effectively with your dog. remember, dogs are eager please but they don't always know what it is you want from them. being able to tell them, "yes, that is what i wanted" versus "no, that was not right" without getting the dog (and youself) frustrated is what is all about. positive reinforcement is essential.

look into 'clicker training'. if done right, it can be very effective and i'm sure it can be applied to searching out weed. make it a fun game for them, and they'll catch on quickly.

here's an idea: place some food in various hidden corners of your house, then teach them to hunt around for the food. when they understand the task of finding and seeking out things, put some weed next to the food that they will be looking for. eventually, they'll start to associate the smell of weed with searching for food. gradually remove the food and have them only look for the weed. each time they find the weed, they get a treat from you. repeat a 1000 times and you might have something. :)

the best use of that would be if you lose bags often.

i can't think of any other use for that which wouldnt be horribly immoral, and involve robbing people or stealing crops...

It would be funny though if you were walking your dog in a big public place, to see how many people the dog sniffs out

Use it to see who's holding if you are in need of weed.

Hey guys... Thank you for all the info... Monster, I love your idea.. that would work. I'm acctually quite eager to start training (at least now that I have an idea of how this would be done... and Monster, it seems like an easy way to train her.

Anyhow, could be cool, and hey Nesta.. no man... you have me all wrong. I would never use a dog to sniff out crops or steal.. I was more interested in having a stoner dog that could sniff out weed at camping trips, on the beach.. if anything it would be a good ice breaker when meeting new people. and hey, could also help me score when were out in cottage country easier... but never would I use that to steal man...

Besides, if anything... some folks love teaching thier dog stupid tricks... this is more of a trick I think I would want my dog to know ;)

Anyhow, I'll let ya guys know how it all goes...

    Peace guys

Im pretty sure you can teach your dog that, ive seen videos on youtube or somewhere on the interwebs of people who trained their dogs to find stuff. In this case you just teach them to find something else.... You can probably find methods of training online also.

And yes, I have thought of trying to teach my dog that too. But I wouldnt get much use out of it at the moment...
