WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama had some fun with at least one question at his online town hall, saying he doesn't think legalizing marijuana is a good strategy for turning around the economy.
Obama told the audience Thursday that one of the most popular questions was whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of the recession. The president jokingly said:
"I don't know what this says about the online audience."

In a serious response, he said he didn't think that was a good economic policy.

No surprise, calling for legalization at the national level like that is political suicide.

I agree, it's got to start on a state level.

It's ironic a country, the US,the only country in the free world that has the rediculous criminal practice of allowing prescription drug advertising all over the place for the last 9 years or so has such a problem with marijuana. It should be de-criminilized at minimum.

Why would the government want to legalize pot......it would mean that all of those low down stinking cops trying to irradicate weed would have to get a real job like the rest of us. Why would you think otherwise....billions of government funding for the drug enforcement agents and cops to waste and burn through are the prize. The common man has no chance to win in this world. :beatdeadhorse5:

    Exactly.

And besides, the government ships in the majority of the cocaine and heroin. They make tons of money shipping the drugs in, and tons of money on the other end with the prison-industrial complex that thrives on jailing non-violent drug offenders.

The government isn't going to do anything in the public's favor. When do they ever?

i think it will happen eventually.....someday they are going to have to realize that they are wasting billions of dollars paying the DEA to search and destroy a drug that isn't even really a drug.

I agree with Bungle, we were close to decriminalize pot up here in Canada, until the US told our gov no. It is a huge waste of tax dollars, but that is what those in command want. It is less addictive than alcohol but it would mean a huge shift in LE. F the gov, what I put into my body is none of their concern. I believe it should be legalized and taxed.

Things are really moving along now.
Michigan. Illinois. California. Hell, Alaska. . .
I think I'm gonna go next door, up to Chicago, go to the doctor complaining of insomnia and digestive problems. Hey, I wouldn't be lying.

This probably goes without saying but. . . can you imagine the mass exodus of Americans to Canada if that DID happen?

There's no way the U.S. would allow it. Not at the time, at least, but as I just mentioned these times are coming to an end.
