Is this the way to tackle the threat of terrorism? What purpose does this actually serve?

Yes, of course. Dont you know anything Liffybum? We tackle terrorism by handing over our identities and letting people film us while we take a crap, thats how we do things in the UK. "If you have nothing to hide then it shouldnt bother you" cures all, you may even become so engrossed in feeling saintly that you completely forget that youre being spied on for no particular reason:)
Though I may have exaggerated somewhat:p

Of course this is just to further break up drug rings and instill more fear of your government into you. Johnny law in all honesty probably already does this... Their just telling you now because soon it will become very apparent.

I'm sure they already have access to anything they want to, and I don't see much of a problem with that - on a case by case basis as part of specific investigations, ideally accountably and with permission overseen in a judicial process. This whole idea of requiring IT companies to keep databases of everything every single one their users does just on the off chance one of them commits a crime seems to be really overstepping a line. Yet another overstepped line in an ongoing series of overstepped lines...

^ true true, however if you look at it like I do we should all be free to say and do without having to be worried were being watched. Its not just the uk its every where now to think that governments dont have very technical means of keeping track of their sheep is silly. I am beginning to think their heavily monitoring phone calls...

They're constantly setting standards for how much they can violate our freedoms and privacy, and will continue to do so until they either control all, or there is a reaction.

They have been doing this for years , same as putting every babys dna on a dna database they have been doing that at birth for years .
msn conversations phone conversations satellites watching you from space their pesky .
facebook and other social networking sites are a great way to figure out peoples circle of friends .

what i noticed is how facebook must be monitoring whats said on the site for adverting purposes ive been getting learn to sail ads and thats because I said go to sea or Im thinking of going to sea in my comments .

Makes me laugh how theyve become cleverer and craftier with it. I used to get "want to lose weight?" and "make your husband love you again" adverts, presumably because they assumed a lot of married women are overweight and unhappy. Now the ads are so precise its a bit unnerving. I got fertility treatment ones the other day, and rodent care products the next. Rather a strange coincidence

I got to school for Criminology, some of the courses are designed for Internet, cyber-crime, and spying on people via internets ..
There is a office close to where I live and all they do there is search the internet for criminal activities.. be it pedofiles, drug dealing, prostitution, and burglarized goods for market on the Ebay and Kregslist.. they do it all.

Ive handed evidence of a paedophiles internet activity and saved files to the police and they literally laughed me off and didnt give a shit. A year later the mans computer was seized, images found, and he was released the same day. So I remain confident monitoring my facebook will do the world of good for children everywhere:rolleyes:

I was only surprised to hear this wasn't already being done. It comes to something when you can open the Mail on Sunday and find an article in the comment section on how Britain is too economically liberal and socially repressive and the two need to be reversed....

Has anyone gotten those facebook ads that use your music preferences to advertise something completely unrelated?

For example, I kept getting one that said
"Like boards of Canada? Then try this new online game! No, they're not in it (yet) but it includes awesome indy/electronic artists such as blah blah blah blah blah"

    Or

"Like the Flaming lips? Then check out the latest album by All American Rejects!" Out of curiosity I decided to look up the All American Rejects, and not only do they sound nothing like the flaming lips but they really suck. Like, a lot.

If you start worrying about being watched, it means they've won already.

My mate says Facebook was originally set up with funding from the CIA as it's an ideal tool for monitoring social networks. He's not one usually given to paranoid conspiracy theories.

From what I can gather, the capital invested into Facebook in the early days came from companies some of whose management had served on the board of venture capital associations which also included people who had connections with the US department of defence and CIA. At that level of remove, I doubt there are many large corporations which don't have such a connection. To think this means it is "funded by the CIA" is definitely getting into the realm of paranoid conspiracy theory...
