i was just intrigued... are any of you aware of the andrew lloyd webber musical "jesus christ superstar"? i mean, i am, and i love it, but from a completely non-religious viewpoint. it's just that i'd heard some christians find it offensive for some reason... why is that? does the idea of a singing jesus not appeal?!
if anyone's seen it and has any thoughts, i'd be interested to hear. what exactly is so offensive about it?

When I was a kid back in the days when it first came out on record, we had a religious education teacher at school who used to play it to us! He was also a vicar of the Church of England, and quite obviously, didn't find it offensive!

I was always in two minds about it - some of the tunes, I liked, others not so much. But I bought it because the original record featured Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, a band I liked back then, on vocals as Jesus!
Myself, I find the idea that this could offend anyone quite ridiculous.

Oh I could sing the whole thing to you, it is by far my favorite musical. I'm Christian, but come on, I wouldn't be in this forum if I weren't a hippie, too!
I think people are offended by the language and titilation factor. the language is modern and beautiful IMO. But I really can't stand modern rewrites of the bible, because the bible is sacred text and JCS is theatre. The titilation factor, I gotta admit is borderline offensive but that's to blame on theater's interpretations, and the nature of rock and roll.
You might then want to ask if the devil's in rock n roll. I say yes. but I don't know what else to say about that.

I love the movie, super imposing pictures of modern war planes in with the visuals. Just great. I think that the Christain community, at the time, was boycotting the musical because it hinted that Jesus was a man, not a god.

    pastor bob's favorite musical...
we parents took the teener kids from church to a local staging...
very nice to see it live...

hmmm, one of the first things (new) pastor scott did upon arriving in town was to help stage a local production of "godspell"...

& good old pastor floyd was one of the initial developers of the christian clown ministry --- really excellent clown-led worship, mind-blowing stuff...

some folks just aren't gonna like non-traditional presentations (or representation, heh...)
