I Love You, Man Movie Blurb by Shale March 22, 2009 If you've read any of my movie blurbs over the years, you know I like these formulaic romantic comedies. This one has a little twist to the formula, in that it explores the awakening of male bonding in a guy who was always content just hangin' with women. Our story starts with Peter (Paul Rudd) proposing to his girl Zoey (Rashida Jones). They seem the ideal couple, he is very attentive and likes doing things with her but when it comes time to actually plan the wedding, it comes out that Peter has no guy friends. No best man. The Ideal Couple About to Marry Zoey easily has several close girl friends (Who, to Peter's surprise have been clued to their most intimate moments). Thus begins the awkward quest for Peter to do guy things and hang with guys. There are several comic failures, including an ill-fated poker game with the guys and having a "man date" with a guy who turns out to be gay. Peter, having a gay younger brother took being kissed passionately by a guy rather calmly. (The setting of this movie is in LA, which obviously is a different place than California, which recently passed that mean-spirited Prop 8) Then Peter the realtor runs into Sydney (Jason Segel) the investor, a real guy who is crashing an open house in search of available divorcees and cougars. Peter is attracted to Sydney's frank and honest take on everything and the two exchange cards. The Guys Meet This odd couple, the single, casual, unfettered man's man and the somewhat nerdy straight laced gentleman hit it off - again with some comic moments of discomfort. Everyone seems happy, including Zoey who is glad that her guy now has other friends. Actually, the more Peter hangs with Sydney the closer they become and the more like a typical guy he becomes. They both have an interest in rock music, both love Rush and both play guitar, something Zoey didn't know about Peter. Oh, you see the formulaic conflict appearing, do you? Yep, a lot of us guys like to spend more time with other guys than with our girls - a common complaint with lots of married couples. Peter and Sydney do become best buddies and Zoey feels left outside of their relationship, especially when the three of them attend a Rush Concert. Best Buds and Fiancé at a Rush Concert Well, at this point I guess the movie could go in a couple different directions and still have a happy ending so I won't reveal the results of the formula. But I did like the movie and having been married, can understand the dynamics of male bonding and balancing that with your marital relationship.
Haha, I saw this too. Pretty funny movie. It was like a merging of Forgetting Sarah Marshall humor with Role Models humor. I didn't find it as much as a romantic comedy, because it doesn't focus on that aspect as much as finding the friend, but I found the movie pretty good.
