    Is it better to let the long hairs down or to keep it in a crochet hat. Does it matter on the locking process...

    Aslong as what your wearing isn't so tight that it would prevent movement, you should be fine

    But letting them be free is sweet

    both

    down=movement
    up=compression

    both are needed to dread..wether ya wear a hat or not they move when down then are compressed when u sleep on em
    during the day leaving em down to move then stuffing em ina hat awhile gives ya both

    give em lil time down then lil time up..whatever feels right at the momment
    sometimes u just gotte get em outta the way..other times u just want em flowing freely..

    i like wearing mine down and free, but when they were younger i wore hats more often.
    i htink a loose tam helps knotting, you can even wear one when you sleep. they need movement too... just do whats most comfortable.
