I was bored and decided to do some twist and rip on some parts of my hair..
worked alot better than backcombing imo.

Didn't even hurt..and they looked and felt pretty tight since the start.

Anyone else have success with this?

Yeah, I have some really loose hair where my bangs would be that refuses to lock up on its own, so I tried twisting and ripping. So far it seems to be staying, but I haven't washed yet. I'll update tomorrow after I wash and try and get some photos too.

oneExodus...here's a few responses i got in a thread i started (if you want to see them in their original habitat and attached to their proper owners see the thread titled "dread noob")

"twist n rip will give a tighter look from the start
id just try not to make the 1st knots too tight to the root to avoid the sticking out weirdness..
1st knots concider the foundation, try to get em about an inch from the scalp..then build off that..
if u do it that way they will form niocly and hang perfectly from the start without sticking out all over

as for method... ive made some really nice tight dreads by a combo of backcombing and twist and rip. basically, you backcomb several strokes so you have some knots, then separate the loose hair and rip apart to force the knots higher and tighten them. then recombine the loose hair, twist and separate and rip again. then start all over.

you can also just backcomb. the poofyness can be taken care of by palrolling or a hat.
you could try just twist and ripping, but on strait thin hair, i think you would have troubles. you need to have some sort of knot to push up the dread and such strait hair often needs some help in that department. thats why i backcomb a few strokes first.

anyway, hope that helped and keep us updated
    twist and rip is simple
twist a section of hair tightly ti the end
grab the ends splitting it in 2 (randomly) then pull those two parts away from eachother forcing knots downward, retwist reseperate and repull over and over till the knots are near the ends

when u split the end to rip hairs your shouldnt be 2 istinctly seperated parts the hairs should be intermingled some
    hard to explaun
ok ..if u didnt twist and pulled 2 sections apart theyd seperate clear to the roots unless some hairs from the right sectuiion should be in the left section and vice versa
so when u twist then seperate this is the tendency to have criss crossed hairs ..thats what you want so dont try making the 2 sections your pukling apart too distinct from eachotherr

ITS HARD TO EXPLAIJ BUT EASTY to do
    anbd faster and less dammaging
the rip shouldnt be a real ripping your just pulling to get knots to move downward>>not hard enough to break hairs>>although some might still

u twist 1 strand then seperate it at the end into 2 randomly pulling apart then when u pulled so far the knots move all the way down bring em together and retwist repull
u wont see much results till u do 10+ to pile intop of eachother"

(from various posters....mainly soaring eagle, some from scatteredleaves, i think they were the only two i quoted)

    yea i recognized it all

i have never personaly done it (that i know of..some of the idle playing i did years ago may have accidently been simular) but when you think about different methodfs logicly its fairly easy to figure out which ones are the most dammaging wghich would give the best results ..and most dreadlike results friom the start
personaly if i was going to rush dreasds in any way id take it even a step further towards natural and instead of twist and rip ..i diont think it has a name....lets call it pinch and play..yea that worlks
twist it the same, with 1 hand pinch the ends hard, then the other pinch just below that only slightly less hard and stroke it towards the base oknow the play brings up the image of masterbation but not quite like that ya freaks..lol just push whatever hairs u can pull loose from the tightly pinched ends toewards the roots after doing that a bunch till your only holding a tew hairs by the end stroke the dread losely upwards pulling the hairs towards tyhe tip retwist and repeart..shouldnt hafta do it a while lotta times..your not trying to make tight dreads ..just get a lil baby dreadlet like thing going then let time take over the method should be extremely gentle zero dammage most likely..it almost mimics what theyd do naturaly so is sorta an acelerated natural..almost..closest thing ya can get with methods though

im not sayin your gonna get near the same results as twist n rip and id probly only attempt it on hair under 6-8 inches (thats me though u can try if u want)
theyre not gonna be as tighyt as twist n ripped ones but will seem very much like natural dreads a few weeks after they started really becomming dreads so they'll have a more natural foundation to grow on..in several weeks to a minth or so they should be fairly close in theyre development though

haha i'm far too lazy to do any maintence. I was just kinda playin around twistin my hair then I realized why they call it twist n rip and kinda just did it to like 3 sections of hair. Ill just let the natural process take over the rest.

    :cheers2:

I used the twist n rip method and it has worked out soo well. They've never came out and I'm nearly 5 months:)I feel that twist n rip knots it up more than backcombing.

i <3 twist and rip. i have one little tiny fella that was twist and ripped from a chunk of loose hair that resulted from epic ripping. hes flat, short, loopy and crazy and i love him.
in my experience, twist and rip is easier to do with small sections and thin hair. trying to do it to a large section of my hair... it just doesnt turn out as well as with a small section.

Well you all know that from my previous haircut that I had hair underneath that was too short to backcomb when I first done my head 7 months ago. Well last week I backcombed them, and they all fell out when I washed (since I did not wax them) so think Im gonna try the rip and twist back there. Damn my hair and its refusal to do what I want it to do!!!!!!

I wish I would have done the twist n rip instead. I backcomb my whole head and just let it do what it wanted, I didn't backcomb sections. But now I have these crazy, loopy as hell, messy looking chunks that I think would look better if I twisted then ripped.

Mine are new twist & rips. Only about a week old. But I've washed them and they stayed in for the most part. The bottoms ( which weren't very tight anyways) came out and are wispy & messy! ( The top half stayed in extremely well) I agree with SL about the smaller amount of hair thing. The ones that used less hair are the tightest and the bigger ones in the back are pretty squishy and came undone the most.
