I've heard a lot of rumors too, but I am still using hushmail without any problems. Just be careful. Then I think you'll be alright.
I have heard that as well, but I think it's because at least in one case, LEO leaned pretty heavily on them to give up the information of one well known vendor. I don't know any specific details, I just heard this through rumors on message boards and stuff.
lol, why are you relying on rumours, when in the terms of agreement you clicked "yes" to to create your account, it says that the website will cooperate with any law enforcement agency and investigation. it's not a secret. they do this so they won't be shut down for aiding illegal activity. there is NO email site which will not cooperate with authorities in its jurisdiction. just think of it from the website owners point of view. either he gets in shit, or 'alex445@hushmail.com' gets in shit. hmm, tough choice.
yea there are no "safe" email as far as standard email use goes. they will give u up in a heartbeat if it means you gettin busted over them. now there are a few tools u can use to make it much harder for LE to actually bust you. binary shadow has a few very detailed threads on jus this. i suggest u do some searchin to find them.
Hushmail is actually one of the worst as they force Java. Safe-mail used to be a bit better but hardly and now its too hard to get an account from them. People need to be used GPG and encrypting themselves, and accessing the E-mail with Tor. If you do anything else you are making yourself the low hanging fruit and will be the first to get busted if anyone does.
Ah - was about to ask binary to chime in. Really, with a strict regimen of anonymous coffee shops and tor (Firefox plug-in for the less motivated) I can't imaging how you might be compromised. If you must work from home, leave your router open. Without WEP, I cannot imagine it to difficult to breed doubt in the minds of peers that you were the actual person sitting in front of said PC. Cheers!
If you work from home I suggest you use Tor (as always). When you use Tor make sure to only access websites over SSL or else a malicious exit node can eavesdrop on your traffic. I also suggest (depending on if you live in a city or the country) that you buy a nice long distance WiFi antenna. You can get a sweet WiFi antenna / amp for around $100. Also use a Mac address spoofing program. Now when you connect to check your E-mail the connection looks like this: You -----> Distant Neighbors WiFi -----> Tor Entry Node ----> Tor Relay Node ----> Tor Exit Node ----> E-mail account instead of this: You ------> E-mail Account. You should also use GPG and refuse to work with vendors who don't use GPG, outside of the Chinese vendors (who refuse to use GPG, possibly because it is illegal to use encryption in China). I cut them some slack because they are so big they don't care if they work with me or not, its sketchy to use encryption where they live, and for the most part they deal with gray area drugs. Anything not gray area I would straight up refuse to even talk about it unless the vendor agrees to use GPG. The last thing you want is for your shipping address to sit unencrypted in the E-mail box of a dude being watched by the feds. Thankfully most vendors use GPG now, but its up to the market to get them all to use it. Learn how to use it, and demand that it be used. Also vendors it is to your benefit for you to use GPG as well. Do you want hundreds of E-mails to be used as evidence against you, or do you want only the E-mails from the cops to be used against you? Oh and also everyone should encrypt their computers with Truecrypt or similar...full drive encryption. If worst comes to worst just turn your computer off and you just gave yourself major leverage. With out an encrypted computer you are naked if they find you. People who use Tor in addition to GPG + Drive encryption are at minor risk. Oh and on forums that block Tor and don't require vendors or members to have GPG keys on display (some of you may know who I am talking about)..... Don't trust them! (Hipforums blocks some Tor nodes but this isn't a source forum and it public registration, so that is apples and oranges by the way). Even the scammer forums don't block Tor. No one knows who runs that forum, the admins and mods fell out of the sky. They block Tor and give awful (liar) reasons for it. A lot of people think it is an undercover forum like Dark Market was (a carder forum that turned out it was run by the FBI the entire time and they were just gathering info). I won't go into this anymore but I just feel I should attempt to warn people how I (and many others who have been in the game for 6 years +) perceive that place.... If you must go there keep refreshing Tor until you get a node they have not blocked. Your life is worth more than convenience. lol whoa I went way off topic. Hope I answered some questions ;-)/
Well it's not that hard with WEP turned on either since it doesn't take much time/effort to crack it. If they decide to raid you then you're already pretty much fucked as they'll most likely find something. Make sure you've done everything to keep them away from your Secret Tweaker Pad
hushmail/safe-mail.net etc have always been unsafe, whenever you give your info to a third party you are putting yourself at risk, there are some secure* e-mails out there but I would rather not list them at this point.
