last thing about backcombing, they all turn out different with each person. here are a few links of people that used DHHQ products to do their dreads and you can see that not one single one is alike. it really comes down to what you do with your hair while it dreads, and everyone hair knots up different. how is backcombing and different from twisting and using wax? it all is the same, its a means to get to an end. dreads are dreads, what are unnatural dreads?did you use the fake dread pieces and glued them in your hair? thats the only thing that i can think of that would be unnatural dreads. well here are some that are backcomb but i really like. i really love this guy dreads

If only he would let us have our views without his scare tactics on every thread....

Natural dreads are cool, no arguement there. I just don't like SE's judgemental and all-knowing additude.

    Yeah, that too. :D
Some of his points are valid though...but even then he comes across so judgemental & close minded that it's hard to take.

I normally don't share SE's point of view on many things, but in most cases I can spot the difference between back combed and natural dreads.. Natural just have that certain look to them. Uneven sections (if sections are visible at all), loose hairs, and they just have a certain look and feel to them that backcombed dreads don't express to me.

There are some cases where backcombed ones can be mistaken for natural, but for the most part it's easy to spot

i disagree pat. why dont you identify the pics i posted and we will see how easy it is to tell.
with mature dreads, i find its almost always very hard or impossible to tell. im talking 3+ years. its only in the beginning stages that i find it obvious.
matted hair is matted hair, no matter what you did to get it that way.
soaringeagles dreads look smooth, even and frizz free: not somehting you might attribute to natural dreads. its purely due to their age.
mine (2 years) were backcombed and are totally insane: completely random sizes with a shit ton of frizz and loose hair, a couple of congos and loops galore. most people think they are naturals. but give them a few more years and theyll be smooth and you wont be able to tell as easily.

My own dreads are my inspiration. Sounds odd but I hate them so so much right now, If I didn't have patience they'd have been cut long ago. I'm just waiting for them to look shit hot.

ScatteredLeaves let me have a guess at your backcomb vs natural dreads :)

    1st I think is natural
    2nd natural
    3rd natural again
    4th Natural?

Why should it matter anyway as to who has what method done? It's just a method at the end of the day. Infact it's just hair. There's way too much drama involved at the moment I've noticed I'm not overly fond of how it's shaped the board so I may hang out on other forums just until it's died down a bit.

I don't have any pics, I'm sure I could find some, but I'm not really into posting pics of other people without their permission. Anyway humblebee's dreads were, and still are a massive inspiration for me, and also dancerAnnie? She used to be on this forum, she might still be on hipforums somewhere. Don't think she has her dreads anymore though:( Either way I always found her dreads very inspirational as well.

*EDIT* I think there are probably quite a lot of people who know what those dreads look like though.

Yeah but backcombed dreads still have closer to even sections rather than natural where you can see some sections that occupy more than a quarter of the persons head. Some naturals have only 6 roots where backcombed normally have atleast 20 minimum. And natural people have way more loose hair than any backcombed set.

And it's hard to compare mature backcombed and natural because most people that backcomb dont even keep their dreads for a year because they want there dreads for fashion purposes and get bored with them.

Note: I said most people. There are exceptions

Isn't section size more to do with choice than method?

Somewhat. But when you use a method other than natural, you have control over section sizes. Whereas most natural people only rip some hair into sections to allow access to scalp and prevent pain if a dread is getting to big and pulling too much

I think a lot of it has to do with WHAT you do ( or don't do) with your dreads after they've been made. Someone may backcomb, but if they don't do any maintenance, wash every few days, they're dreads will fall apart and could in the end look more 'natural' than someone who backcombed and maintained theirs with a crochet hook every day.

I'm not sure why everyone is so up in everyone elses business about which method is better. We all chose one that was right for us and it shouldn't be a debate over which way is the right way. As long you love your ropes that's all that matters.

I thought we were just discussing the differences, not picking a best method:confused:
