Hej hej:D ! Its true our government wants it closed, but thats never gonna happen, too many of us love Christinia, and would do anything to keep our conservative government from terring it apart.. You can read so much more about it on www.forsvarchristiania.dk which also is translated to english..

about the veggie restaurants, i dont think it will be a problem for you to find restaurant that have vegetarian meals on the menu, but if you want it all vegetarian. There's a all vegetarian, all ecologic restaurant in "pilestræde 48"
I've have'nt been there, but i've heard that its a good restaurant.

    peace

I'm also from Denmark. I don't live in Copenhagen - I live in a city named Aalborg in the other end of the country.
Yeah, our stupid government wanna shut Christiania down. Be in a hurry, before it just looks like another glass/steel or grey concrete neighborhood of Copenhagen completely.
Last summer there was a great protest party arranged by Christiania. That was last time I experienced the real Christiania, and it was the last time. Because now they made negotiations with the government and so on. So Christiania will be institutionalized for the future. The famous "Pusher Street" has been shut down - hashisch is not sold manifest there anylonger, but by dealers in the shadows, just like in any other city neighborhood in Denmark. The shut-down of Pusher Street was not a part of the institutionalizing agreement, though. The police occupied Christiania for months, and drained the community. The shut down of Pusher Street was the cause/beginning of the institutionalization, not the result of any agreement. The police occupation has already drained the community very much, so when you visit Christiania, keep in mind that it's not the original community you experience - it's the sad ruins of a beautiful community you will see. Christiania is still a place worth visit, but you better hurry! Within 10 years it's all has either becomed bulldozed or 'orwellshed'.
There are plenty of veggie places, especially at Christiania. But since I don't live in Copenhagen, I can't give you any special advice. But ask people at Christiania, and you will get an answer to all such questions (and Astrid already told you one place, I see). :)

p.s. long times since I've seen a dane in here last. Welcome Astrid. :)
-I'm not questioning the engagement and the spirit of Christiania, Astrid. But isn't it time to build 1000's of new Christianias in other locations instead? When we sing "I kan ikke slå os ihjel", isn't it more about the spirit than the excact location? We carry Christiania within us - that's what the song means. They can bulldoze the place, but they can't bulldoze your and my mind.

p.p.s. don't misunderstand me... I'll fight for Christiania as long as possible.

    Hej ulv ved dør...
thanks! I've never seen a dane in here before.. where did you get to know this site...?
Do you know if there any danish sites like this?
I see what you mean, it is all about the spirit.. But the location is the place that keep it all together. And why would they get promision to build a new christinia..? I think its there, or no where..
    peace..

    Hej Astrid.

Who talk about promision? Political winds are blowing in this decade, and we're talking about revolution! The simple-living-trend is just the beginning. Within a few years there will once again be pioneers who move out of their appartments to start up new communes. That's how Christiania started, and it will happen once again. :)

I will also do what I can to support Staden, but we must also be creative and use our imaginations; revive our faith in that everything could be different, and believe that we're the ones to change it.

Once upon a time, four years ago, I was surfing on the net, and by a coincidence I found this site. I was hanging around at Philosophy Forum and other forums at the beginning, and actually another dane in here introduced me to Europe Forum. Including me and you, I have only met four danes in here by now!

Half a year ago the whole site accidently was deleted at Skips (Webmasters) server, or something like that, so we had to start it up all over again. I've often wondered why there was no more danes in here. :)

I've been trying to find danish pendants on the net, but without succeeding. If they exists, it's probably only small networks, with limited users. But tell me, if you find a cool site!

Thanks you very much Astrid and Wolf for your help. I am really looking forward to visiting. Lets hope Christiania comes through the current intolerant climate, I hear there is an election in 2005 so maybe the current right wing goverment may be gone in a year.

    Many Thanks again
    Simon

Hej wolf, I think its interesting theory what you saying with the revolution, but terminating Christinia, would be the the same thing as terminate the our Royalties, not that i support monarki, coz i don't. In the end of day, almost no dane wants christinia closed. We see all this people fooling around with sweatshirts that says "bevar Christinia". which i think is a little stupid, because alot of them is children, who dont know shit of what it means, only wearing them because, it have become fashion to wear. but thats an other thing. I think Denmark is yet enough freeminded to let it stay, but still its hard to foresee. and to the thing with the websites, I will!

    All my pleasure. :)

Well, hopefully it won't turn out that dramatic as I described. But Christiania is a very passionate topic for me. But still I think that this wonderful community is about to get institutionalized/normalized/orwellshed (but maybe not bulldozed). So if I'm gonna correct and moderate myself, let me express it this way: There are negotiations between the system and Christiania (not by Christianias will, though), and Christiania is in a middle of a process, forced to become more and more institutionalized and normalized right now. I'm ashamed of my government, and I'm proud of Christiania. That's why I asked you to hurry - the sooner you go, the more original spirit of the community you'll experience. Please keep those words in mind, if you get disappointed when you go there in 2005. :)

Terminating the monarchy would be the end of the monarchy, and no new and modern monarchy could replace it, since the idea of a monarchy is based on a traditional old-fashioned idea, rather than a modern idea. In difference communes like Christiania is modern and dynamic reflecting as possible. Therefore I think a new Christiania would always emerge if the original one was bulldozed, in difference to a monarchy.

As you describe very well, everybody fools around with a red t-shirt with 3 yellow suns, and some kids even fool around with a black t-shirt with 3 yellow suns. There are plenty of supporters, but if they don't really know what it means, can they be considered as true valuable/serious supporters then?
I understand that you're from Sjælland (?) -I'm living in Jutland, and here in Jutland there are many cool folks, but unfortunately the juttish majority are ignorant rednecks... And their opinion is that Christiania should be bulldozed. That's the common juttish opinion about Christiania, unfortunately. Half of the danish voters are (unfortunately) living here in rightwing conservative Jutland. If Jutland was not a part of Denmark, we would not have a rightwing government at power. If Jutland didn't existed, Denmark would not be in war in Iraq. I'm not only ashamed to be a dane - I'm also often ashamed to be jyde.

But I definately agree that it would be wrong to give up the fight for Christiania, cuz Christiania is the stronghold of freedom. Christiania is the role-model for all progressive inspiration to change the society, and therefore Christiania is definately worth fighting for. But still, I think, that our minds are not depending on a location, and what's connected to that location. Christiania is a location, but it's just as much, or even more, a philosophy of living and a way to organize a community in a human way. A source for big amounts of inspiration for your, mine and any past and future generations.

Depends on the season, I think (in the summertime many ppl settle down, I think). All round year, they're about 1000, but when Christiania was established in the early 70's, they were thousandS.

    love,
    -wolf. :)
