Britain is doing just fine.Their economy will bounce back, and unlike the US people who are out of work or poor/middle class do not have to worry about medical care, with the NHS(Britains version of socialized medicine).Heck if your out of a job in Britain due to the bad economy or, for whatever reason you will still do much better than the same person in the US in EVERY way.--
It's easy for you to glorify socialized medicine when you don't have it yourself. The thing about America's medical system that makes it so good is the fact it's based on competition, so there's a definite drive to keep rolling out the biggest and best. If we completely rolled over to socialized healthcare, chances are good the desire to research and develop as they do now would definitely slow down, if not cease, because if there's not boocoos of money involved, why do it? Afterall, that is the American attitude.
Socialized medicine doesn't mean that you can't pay for better health care from private providers if you so desire. Socialized anything doesn't mean the abolition of private enterprise and competition; it simply means that no one is going completely without. Also, lots of the R&D you speak about is made possible by public funds granted to the private sector. As we've seen recently, the private sector is not shy to ask money from tax payers when they deem it necessary in the slightest (in spite of all the anti-government propaganda). Lastly, the U.S. had a functional public health sector around WWII that greatly diminished infant mortality and all but ended deaths by yellow fever and influenza.
OTOH when the government is picking up the tab for pennies on the dollar, even though the pharmos aren't trying as hard, they also aren't ramming pills down our throats for every perceived ill. Particularly pills that may or may not have undergone sufficient trials.
Socialized medicine, when introduced to America, will be modeled after the British system, which entails rationing of health services and limited coverage for the elderly and disabled. A perfect system of control for the eugenicists. It's no wonder why state health care is being backed so heavily by the pharmaceutical cartels.
making generalisations like this isnt healthy, Id love to be free of stereotyping and judging people on past events. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to not know our place in history, or in the world, life would be alot more free.
I realize the thread was done in humor. But I just wanted to mention this about socialized medicine. In the countries that do it 'right' it's alot better than Americas current system of being run by drug and insurance companies(corporate socialized medicine). And some of the best medical innovatons are coming out of countries outside of America.---And if you ask anyone in Western Europe if they would trade their medical system for the US's you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that would.Americas medical system used to work great,it does not anymore.America does not have to completely roll over to socialized medicine but it MUST crack down hard on drug and insurance companies.
though there's a bit of a stir over private clinics and whether or not they should be legal. better doctors, higher prices, creating a socio-economic divide people don't want to see, and frankly, they'd like access to those better doctors, too.
one thing you need to remember that it's only okay to mock the usa or the foreigners get all pissy. if that's what you're going for, RUN WITH IT, MIGHTY WORD WARRIOR.
I thought you called me the road warrior at first. And I was going to be offended, because I'm not cancer-ridden.
