I've lost about 30kg this year and I'm damned happy about it. Problem is /how/ I lost the weight.

At the beginning of the year I took up smoking. I realized that when I smoke I'm less hungry and managed to cut my eating down to 0 - 1 meals per day. Frankly I've loved the diet! I eat as much as I want to on the weekends and during the week I eat as little as I possibly can without being too uncomfortable. And I /do/ (strangely enough) feel healthier than I did before the weight loss.

But soon I'll have to start eating right again... and quit smoking. Doh! I just know I'm going to put most of the weight back on, so I don't know what I'm going to do. I suppose the trick will be to eat healthily and try to maintain some control over my urge to eat, but when I'm not smoking I'm eating! :S

Has anyone else here lost weight like this? Did you manage to keep it off? How?

Wow, that is a great idea. Hell if I don't lose weight soon I was going to kill myself, might as well just do it slowly. Thanks.

I thought of my body as an animal and my smoking habit as animalistic. The animals want there food. Tell me, is your higher self, your true self going to give in to the animal? The better way to describe it is food and smoking taking over you. Next time you feel hungry no matter what the drug consider that you yourself your true self, higher self is stronger than a plant, a drug, your brain.
You already know that your higher self is stronger than your brain, urges or drugs or food. Maybe you fasted at some point? I would recommend fasting for one day, smoke a butt the night before and then the next day don't eat, just drink water. This will give you the strengh and will you need to complete your journey to your true needs that you so rightfully deserve for your higher self!

However your brain isn't smarter, it tells you to eat and occassionaly will feel serotonin high and say don't eat, the brain is pushed by emotion so forget trying to reason weight loss I think. Consider your higher self, your higher purpose when losing weight. I found a model I wanted to strive to be like and that helped me, but anyway that was unhealthy.

Smoking is a terrible way to lose weight because you're just substituting one harmful addiction for another. Losing weight or attaining your true body structure is a matter of what you eat and not how much. Food that is high in nutrients and has no harmful junk in it is going to satisfy you and get you to your true body weight in a healthy way. The best things to eat for this purpose are vegetables, whole grains and legumes(beans), and nuts and unrefined vegetable oils in small amounts. Fruit can also be healthy but too much of it can lead to sugar problems. The addictive things in junk food such as sugar, salt, additives, saturated fats, refined and isolated parts of whole foods such as white flour need to be eliminated. Meat and dairy in small amounts can be used but they should be organic because there are lots of harmful chemicals in factory raised animals. Organically grown foods in general are a better way to go for everything you eat because they are higher in nutrient content and don't have all the chemicals.

Well, if you start to get yourself used to working out regularly and eating right, your weight should stabilize. Most people only gain weight back after quitting smoking because suddenly their appetite goes from being greatly diminished by the smoking to having a bigger appetite. I suggest learning how to eat right and making it a permanent change in your life that you stick to forever instead of doing random, unhealthy things to make yourself lose a lot of weight. Diet + exercise = healthy weight if done consistently. It's no magical secret. :)

Pah. You don't lose weight to get healthy. You get healthy to lose weight. The proper way to lose weight is to maximize your digestion, metabolism, nutrient intake and to detoxify. Now your cardivascular system and most likely your metabolism are compromised. When you eat less food your body reduces its caloric intake and holds on to what you eat. When you begin eating more again your body is going to hang on to everything you give it and you'll balloon up again.

I wouldnt recommend that way, its all good though. Eating one meal a day is not the way to lose weight. It will slow your metabolism down; ie, whenever you eat more than one meal a day, you will store fat ferociously. Try eating six small meals. 300-400 calories. Exercise man, walking even. Eat a lot of protein so your muscles stay as intact as possible. You will lose weight. Fast.

60% carbs 20% protein and 20% fat... these procentages can fluctuate a lil.. but stay within reason... usually i keep fat lower than protein if it does fluctuate

also how you eat is more important than what you eat.. to maximize metabolic rate.. eat within the first hour of getting up in the morning... try not to eat 2hrs before bed.. and do not consume refined sugars 8 hrs before you go to bed.. i also try to eat most of my carbs in breakfast/lunch... and keep a lower carb count and higher protein in the afternoon... and make sure to try and drink at least a glass of water with each meal or snack you have.. 1 gallon of water minimum per day

PS: when i quit smoking i did not notice any weight gain.. actually i forced myself to become more active to keep my mind off of smoking.. which actually helped me lose weight.. sugar free gum is also a great cigarette replacement.. or at least it was for me..

Very good advice, joker. Macro-nutrient ratios are extremely important. A few things I'll add to that...

Spread your carbs out throughout the day and burn them off. When the body metabolizes carbohydrates it has to make the decision whether to burn them for energy or store them. The body can only burn as much for energy as the energy you are expending and any excess will be instantly converted to fat. If you eat carbs in small amounts you will increase your metabolic burn and will store less of it as fat. If you exercise, even for just 5 minutes before you eat carbs you will burn a lot more as energy throughout the day, even if you're not burning many stored calories during the exercise.

Also I think that the 60 20 20 ratio is a good all-purpose ratio but if you're trying to lose weight knowing your metabolic type is very beneficial. I happen to be a protein type so I tend to swing towards more fat and protein, which can be tricky but I think I have it almost perfect. There are trainers like the guy in the link I posted who will give metabolic typing coaching. And while 60 20 20 is good for the maintinence of good health, it isn't optimal for weight loss.
