to clear everything up, i know it will be years b4 my dreads would look like the ones in the pics that i posted. i said that they were the size i wanted, thats all those pics are for, to determine size for me. i talked to my cousin last night and decided against just letting my hair dread itself, he said if he was to redo his he would go a different route. his dreads are about 4.5 feet long so he dont want to cut them off to start over. i am going the route that i have seen myself that works and looks good. i made my sections but i didnt not do a grid, only sections that are in a grid is the ones along my part so i still will have it down the center. i am backcombing the hair and going to let it lock up from there. i am not using any wax. i have decided that dreads are a lot like digital animation. there are many ways to start a project but only thing that matters is the end product. so here is what i have done so far i am going back to work now so i will post more pics once i am done i want to thank everyone for their advice
another bit of advice, remove the rubber bands. you dont really need them (espesh at the roots) yes itll keep them sectioned, but theyll degrade and all that shit, leaving a icky ick thats hard to remove to keep the sections separated, use beads or wraps.. better for the hair and looks nicer =]
Those sections are very neatly done! Cor blimey. The strong lines will fuzz over after not very long though
the rubberbands are coming out tomorrow. they are there just til the person that is backcombing my hair is done, they arent backcombing it super tight, just enough so that is has knots that can start grabbing a hold of each other, as you can see i am not loosing much length which i am really happy about, so i will post more images later of my progress on day one of my journey!
yaay =D sounds like youve got it all planned out another thing, it may be a bit difficult to do the backcombing cause of the length of yer hair.. what i mean is, theres hardly anything for the backcomber to hold on too while theyre doing it
mine were slightly staggered on top callie, but its fallen back to its parting.. did with my last set too
everyone i talked to said try to follow your natural part, mine is down the center like that from years of parting my hair that way so i am not worried about that part, as you can see the rest of the parts are staggered, i feel that in a few years this will give me more of a natural look then doing my sections in grids. only time will tell now! well its not as late as i thought it was lol, so i have to wait about 30 minutes b4 starting my hair again. time goes so slow when you are excited and ready to finish something
personally I wouldn't section my hair in rows. It looks to uniformed to me. I would have done a grid over that with random shapes, not squares.
if you look closely in the images you can see that the two top rows are mostly squared, thats mostly, you can see that the rest are not perfect squares just sections that are about a inch by a inch.
Lol it really doesn't matter what any of us think about the particulars of your sectioning! Obviously you did it how you wanted otherwise you wouldn't have done it! Presumably as an artist you have some awareness of the appearance of things lol
Woohooo!!! And he's started! Very very exciting! I did the same as you and had the dreads at the top parted where I have been wearing my part for the past.... 15 years. I would have felt so awkward without it and would have regretted not getting it done. I think you are going to be really pleased with it once the back combing starts... that is when the pictures get really funny. Please please share them!
even though im not amy, yes i could see myself go three months without washing. ive gone roughly a year without using soap and the longest ive gone without wetting is probably 1.5-2 months. id go 3 if they didnt start to itch or get too greasy or anything. i wouldnt tell anyone what to do with their hair ever. and i certainly wouldnt condemn someone for not washing for any amount of time... its their own business and if that feels alright to them, then who the fuck cares.
well i am done with the backcombing, i am happy with the results. i have more length then i thought that i would so that is great. now its just a waiting game and letting them lock up here are some pics. as you can see, i made each one just a little different in size and my sections are not in a perfect grid or in perfect squares. this should give me a nice natural look once my hair matures into nice dreads! i will be updating weekly how they are growing and locking at this site http://ravenmikhail.blogspot.com/
