Maybe all the hat-wearing is preventing the movement needed to help your scalp shed properly? I've noticed on the couple of occasions I "maintained" my roots a bit, the reduced movement in that area resulted in an immediate increase in scalp flakes, just in the tightened parts. When you wash your hair, do you get your fingers right in amongst the roots and give the scalp a good scrub? Maybe spend a few minutes each evening massaging your scalp, it might help the skin to shed properly.
